Amazon.com Product Description

Designed primarily for the mobile professional, the Toshiba Satellite A25-S279 Notebook PC is a solid choice for businesspeople and anyone else that needs a powerful and versatile mobile setup but doesn't require the extreme portability of an ultra-lightweight.

As the fastest member of Toshiba's midlevel A20 series of notebooks, the Satellite A25-S279 is driven by a potent 2.8 GHz Pentium 4 processor and 512 MB of DDR SDRAM memory (expandable to 1024 MB). These are solid components that should keep you computing at a top level for some time to come. However, if you operate a lot of 3-D applications such as high-end games or complex animation and design applications, the system's Trident CyberBlade graphics chipset with 32 MB of shared (not dedicated) memory is not sufficient. In this case, you may want to upgrade from the Trident or explore another Toshiba model.

Measuring 13.4 by 11.6 by 1.9 inches and weighing in at 7.9 pounds, the Satellite A25-S279 is a bit larger than average and may be too bulky for those who need their notebook with them on all their journeys. It is, however, packed with capable amenities. Toshiba has included an accommodating 60 GB hard disk, a full-size 85-key keyboard with hotkeys and dedicated CD controls, a generous 15-inch XGA TFT active-matrix display, and a convenient DVD/CD-RW drive through which you can burn and listen to audio CDs, archive files, and enjoy the latest Hollywood blockbusters. In its stock configuration, the unit does not permit DVD burning.

Connectivity options are solid. The system features three high-speed USB 2.0 ports for plug and play peripherals, an S-Video TV-out jack, an RJ-11 modem port for dial-up communication, an RJ-45 LAN port for high-speed networking, and integrated 802.11g wireless support for those times when you just can't plug in. Bundled software includes Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Microsoft Works and Intuit Quicken New User Edition 2003. Typical battery life is estimated at an adequate 2.41 hours. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars amazon.com sucks
an amazon merchant under the name electrophreaky has advertised to sell this item as a new product. I have purchased it and the item was never shipped to me in spite of my numerous attempts to contact seller though his posted email on amazon.com. Tgeseller later dissapeared from the amazon website. Amazon.com has not made an attempt to chased down this lousy seller or provide contact ph no fo him. they insisted on applying their 30 days policy of do nothing and another 30 days and we may refund you. thats 60 days and i am out $1300 which they're banking. people stay away from amazon and its merhcants. no wonder they're losing their ass off as a company.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ugly duckling that will grow on you
I just got my Toshiba A25-S279 yesterday so I can't say if it will last years and years like my buddy's did. The thing that jumped out as soon as I opened the box was how ugly the notebook was. Its large size is also a bit of a problem. At 13.4" x 11.6" x 1.9", it's very hard to find a bag that fits. Most "large" bags only fit up to 13" x 11". You have to go for an "oversized" bag. This notebook looks cheap when compared to other notebooks. And I don't mean Sony which is light years ahead in term of looks.

Here are the reasons why I bought this ugly duckling anyway.
1. It's the most reasonably priced notebook among other major brands. You can't find a better deal on P4 2.8, 60GB, 512MB, DVD-CDRW, built-in 802.11g than this one. Toshiba also gives out generous rebates. Check out their website for details. The store I bought mine from didn't advertise it. Lucky I found a $100 rebate on the Toshiba website.
2. Built quality. All of my friends who bought Toshiba never had problems with theirs. The battery stopped holding charges after over a year, but all notebooks have this problem.
3. It comes with a restore disk. If anything goes wrong, you don't have to scramble for a boot disk and install all the drivers. Just pop in this disk and click OK, OK, once in a while. Your notebook will be back to its original factory installed condition in an hour.
4. It runs directly off the A/C. To preserve the battery life, when I'm at home which is most of the time, I take out the battery completely. Plug the notebook into the UPS and let it run directly off the A/C plug. You can't do that with Dell's. The Dell's circuit isn't completed without a battery. My sister's Dell's battery is completely dead (doesn't hold charge for even one second) but she still need to put her battery in its slot anyway just so the computer would turn on. Very annoying.
5. Built-in wireless. At this price range, it's very hard to find ones that come with built-in 802.11g. Some come with 802.11b, yucks!
It's a lot nicer not having to haul around a wireless card that you may lose or forget to bring with you. Being built-in also means that it frees up the PC card slot for something else you may need.

I highly recommend this notebook to anyone who's going to use this laptop as a replacement PC, who's not travelling a lot, who doesn't mind the ugly look knowing that its the inside (P4 2.8, 512, 60GB yada yada) that counts.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible Tech Support
Toshiba may make good products, but their support is the worst i have ever come across. They have lost my laptop for over a month now and do not care a lick about it. They're tech support team is in Turkey and they dont care a thing about anybody. They kept hanging up on me and refused to help me saying it will take some time. When i called back- no one knew anything and had zero updates. DO NOT BUY TOSHIBA PRODUCTS! Get a Gateway or Dell instead...two companies that actually care about their customers.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good but bulky laptop
Before buying this laptop, I compared just two non-widescreen models, HP ZE5570US and this Toshi. The HP has too much silver plastic and it's just not my taste thought the HP is not that bulky as Toshi. For nearly one month ownership, A25-S279 is overall a good laptop as expected. The performance of 2.8P4+480M (512M-32M video) is more than enough for programming and some graphics s/w. Harddrive is very quiet. 54G wireless is no problem with my D-Link DI624 router. Not sure about PC game though.

However, you should notice there's no free CD burning s/w bundled but a trial one. Also the depth is a bit larger than a regular laptop. Be sure it'll fit your notebook case. They are the reasons I bought a Nero 6.0 Ultra and Samsanite carry case. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Get all the power you expect out of a desktop PC with the Compaq Presario R3160US laptop. Road warriors will appreciate its 60 GB hard drive for storing important documents and productivity applications, as well as its built-in 54g wireless connectivity. The R3160US also features a fast, 64-bit 1.8 Ghz Mobile Athlon 3000+ processor, a DVD+RW/CD-RW combo drive, 512 MB of installed RAM, a huge 80 GB hard drive, and a 15.4-inch widescreen display that's powered by Nvidia's GeForce4 420 Go video/graphics card with 32 MB of dedicated memory.

The Basics

  • Hard Drive: The spacious 80 GB hard drive (4200 RPM) is at the very top of the range for notebook storage, and it offers more than enough capacity for both your work and home files as well as a good-sized multimedia library.
  • Processor: The 1.6 GHz AMD Athlon 64 3200+ processor offers a high level of performance that's equivalent to a 3.0 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor--speedy enough for PC gaming, graphic design software, and multimedia creation. And with its 64-bit architecture, the R3160US is built for the increased demands of future software applications that take advantage of this architecture. It also features a 1 MB L2 cache.
  • Memory: The R3160US comes with a 512 MB built-in memory (2 x 256 MB modules, DDR SDRAM, 333 MHz)--a good start for power users. However, only one slot is accessible for upgrading; it has a maximum RAM capacity of 1280 MB (1 x 256 MB, 1 x 1024 MB).
  • CD/DVD Drive: It is equipped with a combo drive that is capable of reading and writing of both DVDs and CDs. It uses the DVD+RW format, one of two formats for rewriteable DVDs.
  • Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook PC has a 101-key keyboard and touchpad with on/off button and dedicated vertical scroll up/down pad.
Sound and Graphics
The R3160US includes Nvidia's GeForce4 420 Go video/graphics card, which produces good 3-D and DVD playback performance, helps save on battery life, and can drive an external monitro. It also features 32 MB of dedicated video RAM. The 15.4-inch flat-panel screen has a 1280 x 800 native resolution.

The audio card is integrated into the notebook's circuitry, which helps save on cost. The R3160US features two built-in JBL Pro Performance stereo speakers.

Connectivity and Expansion Slots
The R3160US offers a decent variety of external connections:

  • 3 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
  • 1 parallel port for connecting older printers and scanners
  • 1 VGA monitor port
  • 1 S-Video out (for connecting to a TV)
  • 1 PCMCIA (or PC Card) slot (Type I/II compatible and 32-bit card bus)
  • 1 headphone jack and 1 microphone jack
It also has an integrated 802.11g wireless LAN (which is compatible with the more widespread 802.11b and offers faster data transmission rates), integrated 56K modem (V.92), and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).

Preloaded System and Software
The R3160US comes with the Windows XP Home Edition operating system, and it also features Microsoft Works (for working with word processing and spreadsheet documents). Other preloaded software includes Norton Antivirus 2003 (with 60 days of complimentary live updates), Quicken, Microsoft Money, Microsoft Encarta Online Deluxe, Adobe Acrobat Reader, InterVideo WinDVD SE (for playing DVD movies) and WinDVD Creator, and MusicMatch Jukebox.

Dimensions and Weight
Measuring 11.18 x 14.25 x 1.8 inches (L x W x H), it's not the thinnest notebook available. It weighs a moderate 7.8 pounds.

Power
The included rechargeable lithium-ion battery has 8 cells (which refers to the number of charge-storing components within the battery) and offers a standard amount of power for a notebook PC (around 2 hours of typical use).

What's in the Box
This package includes the Compaq Presario R3160US notebook PC, rechargeable lithium-ion battery, AC adapter, phone cord, and operating instructions. ... Read more

The Basics

  • Processor: While at the low end of current Centrino notebooks, the PCG-TR3AP1's 1 GHz Pentium M processor is definitely fast enough for everyday tasks and basic multimedia (it's comparable to a 1.5 GHz Mobile Intel Pentium 4). The Pentium M processor is designed specifically for low-power mobile usage, and it features the latest in power-saving technologies--ensuring you push your battery and productivity to the max.

  • Keyboard & Mouse: The PCG-TR3AP1 has an 83-key keyboard and electro-static touchpad.
Sound and Graphics
The PCG-TR3AP1 has an Intel 855GM chipset integrated graphics card with 64 MB of shared video memory. Combining three new technologies for increased brightness, contrast and viewing angles, the 10.6-inch flat-panel XBRITE LCD offers a bright, vibrant screen for watching DVDs and editing your digital photos. It also has an sound card that's integrated into the main board, and offers built-in stero speakers. It has a high native resolution of 1280 x 768.

Connectivity and Expansion Slots
The PCG-TR3AP1 has an Intel Pro-Wireless 2100BG integrated wireless LAN that connects using the 802.11g wireless standard. You get a smaller offering of connectivity options (due to the notebook's size):

  • 2 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
  • 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) ports for connecting digital video camcordrs and other peripherals
  • 1 RGB monitor port
  • 1 PCMCIA (or PC Card) slot (Type I/II)
  • 1 headphone jack and 1 microphone jack

Preloaded System and Software
The PCG-TR3AP1 comes with the Windows XP Professional operating system (which adds Microsoft's IIS Web server, back-up and recovery utilities, Remote Desktop, and other enhanced business features), and it also features Microsoft Works (for working with word processing and spreadsheet documents). It also is loaded with a bevy of Sony multimedia software: PictureGear Studio and Network Smart Capture (digital photo), DVgate Plus (digital video), and SonicStage (digital music). Other preloaded software includes Intervideo WinDVD and Norton Internet Security Center 7.

Amazon.com Product Description

No matter how specific your requirements, chances are IBM has a ready-made mobile computer to cover them. This model, the ThinkPad T41 (23733HU) Notebook PC, targets those who need a lightweight, capable machine but can't quite justify the cost of a true state-of-the-art unit. Featuring modern perks such Intel's Centrino technology and Microsoft's Windows XP Professional operating system (more powerful and more business-oriented that Windows XP Home Edition), the ThinkPad T41 (23733HU) is a solid and eminently portable medium-duty notebook.

Driven by a 1.6 GHz Intel Pentium M processor with Intel's new Centrino technology (Centrino processors offer improved battery life and more power than similarly rated non-Centrino CPUs) and a solid 512 MB allotment of DDR SDRAM memory, the ThinkPad T41 (23733HU) will efficiently run most common mobile tasks. The system's graphics controller, an ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 with 32 MB of dedicated video memory, helps power the unit through midlevel 3D applications and games but may have some trouble displaying a smooth frame rate when operating today's newest high-end 3D games and 3D design apps.

Tipping the scales at a scant 4.9 lbs. and measuring just 12.2 by 10.0 by 1.0 inches, the ThinkPad T41 (23733HU) is exceptionally easy to transport and operate. IBM has equipped the system with an average-sized 40 GB hard disk for file and program storage, a CD-RW/DVD drive through which you can listen to and burn audio CDs and watch DVD movies, and a 14.1-inch TFT display screen capable of crystal clear 1400 by 1050 resolutions. DVD writing is not supported in this stock configuration.

The ThinkPad T41 (23733HU) is home to many unique and practical perks, including a nifty keyboard-illuminating ThinkLight for low-light situations, an S-Video out port, two high-speed USB 2.0 ports for fast interaction with external peripherals, and a full-size keyboard featuring IBM's user-friendly ThinkPad UltraNav multi-pointing system. An IEEE 1394 FireWire connection, typically used for downloading data from digital camcorders, is not part of the package.

Communication options include a low-speed 56K fax/modem, a super-fast Intel/PRO 1000 Gigabit Ethernet Ethernet connector for incrementally faster network access than traditional LAN technology, and Intel PRO wireless for those times when you can't plug in. Amazon Product Description

The Basics
It was just a few years ago that true micro-notebooks were little more than glorified calculators. But times change and Sony's innovative VAIO VGN-T150/L proves that a three lb. notebook no larger than a traditional pad of paper can indeed deliver adequate power for the majority of typical mobile tasks. Granted, this is not an ideal unit for demanding business and power users or sophisticated 3D gamers. It is, however, perfect for anyone who frequently hauls their notebook with them to remote un-plugged environments and engages in comparatively basic tasks such as word processing, data gathering, finances, contact management and email/Internet sessions. Stunningly portable, extremely battery efficient and more potent than the vast majority of past or present micro-notebooks, the not inexpensive VAIO VGN-T150/L is a miniature dynamo.

The VAIO VGN-T150/L features a widescreen display, that is perfect for watching panoramic DVD movies.

Processor
At the heart of any computer lies the CPU (or processor), a massive collection of miniature transistors that governs the speed and power of the entire unit. Some of today's notebooks are equipped with high-end CPU's on par with those found in top-of-the-line desktop PCs, while others are quick enough only for basic duties such as word processing, email and the like. The VAIO VGN-T150/L is equipped with an Intel Pentium M processor, one of three components that comprise Intel's efficient Centrino system (the others being a specialized Intel chipset and integrated wireless support). Centrino-equipped notebooks are generally smaller, easier on the batteries, and more versatile than their non-Centrino counterparts. Rated at 1.1 GHz, this is an entry-level Pentium M and therefore one of the least powerful in the Pentium M roster, though it's quick enough for most typical notebook applications and features an amazing 2 MB of Level 2 cache for extremely fast recovery of recently accessed information.

Memory
Computers typically store information on their hard drive, but they keep frequently and recently accessed data in Random Access Memory (RAM) for faster retrieval. More RAM means more efficient computing, superior multitasking and less strain on your hard drive. The VAIO VGN-T150/L incorporates 512 MB of RAM, more than enough for most situations.

Video
CPU's are usually so busy doing basic calculations that they need help translating visual output to the viewing screen. This is the duty of the graphics card (or graphics controller). When shopping for a computer, it's good to remember that a video controller with "dedicated" built-in video memory is preferable to one with "shared" video memory wherein the graphics controller borrows a portion of the all-important main system memory. This system's graphics controller is an Intel 855GME with 64 MB of shared video memory. Thusly, the unit shouldn't be counted upon for high-end 3D games or complex 3D animations and graphics, though it will efficiently display 2D and many midlevel 3D applications.

Display
Being a subcompact computer, the VAIO VGN-T150/L features a smallish 10.6-inch WXGA display. But if size is not its strong suit, visual quality is. Being a widescreen display, it's perfect for watching panoramic DVD movies. Furthermore, it takes advantage of Sony's new XBRITE technology and an impressive 1280 by 768 maximum resolution to deliver detailed, bright, high-contrast images.

XBRITE LCD technology creates a new standard of picture quality inspired by high-definition television.

Hard Disk
The system features a 40 GB hard disk. In a time when some notebooks offer hard drives of 100 GB and more, 40 GB may not seem overly generous. However, in the rarified, miniscule world of ultra-compact notebooks, 40 GB of storage space is indeed a sizable amount. Though you likely won't have enough room for a library of space-gobbling video files, the unit will store a typical number of mobile apps and user-created files and a few tunes too.

Optical Drive
An optical drive is essential in today's computing environment. A "CD-ROM" drive allows you to install CD-based applications and play music CDs. A "CD-RW" drive adds CD "burning", so you can also backup your important files to long-lasting discs and create personalized music CDs. With a DVD-ROM drive you can watch DVD movies. And with a DVD-RW drive, you can "write" home movies to durable discs and archive files to DVD (DVDs boast more than seven times the storage capacity of a CD). Some drives allow you to do a combination of all of these tasks. This system features a DVD+RW/-RW drive through which you can do all of the above.

Audio
The unit is equipped with two miniature stereo speakers, a mini microphone jack and a stereo mini headphone jack.

Keyboard and Controls
You'll control your notebook via an 83-key keyboard and standard electro-static touch pad.

Connectivity and Expansion
The VAIO VGN-T150/L offers an assortment of ways to keep in touch, including a 56K modem for low-speed dial-up Internet and email access, a 10BASE-T/100BASE-TX Ethernet port for high-speed wired network and Internet, and an integrated Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection (802.11b/g) for cord-free e-communication at home, at the office or on the road via a local public hotspot. Other key amenities include two high-speed USB 2.0 ports for plug and play devices such as external drives and digital cameras, an IEEE 1394 FireWire port (commonly used for quick data uploads from digital camcorders), and a PC Card Slot for one type I or type II card with CardBus support..

Operating System and Software
Sony will preinstall today's most accepted operating system, Microsoft's Windows XP Home Edition. Other applications include productivity and word processing software and Sony's typically ample array of music, video and digital photo utilities and editing packages.

Dimensions and Weight
Many of today's most powerful notebooks are also the largest, weighing ten or twelve lbs or more and therefore too big and cumbersome for extensive, continuous traveling. These are often referred to as "desktop replacements". On the other extreme are "thin and lights" or "ultra-portables", super-miniaturized units that typically aren't as powerful as their larger brethren but weigh as little as two or three lbs. and will often fit comfortably inside a large purse. The VAIO VGN-T150/L is exceptionally small and comfortable at a mere 3.1 lbs and just 10.1 by 8.1 by 1.0 - 1.3 inches (depending on configuration).

Power
The unit is equipped with a Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery that delivers up to 5.5 hours (with standard battery) and 6.0 to 11.0 hours (with a large capacity battery). These are exceptional figures in today's notebook world. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Performance not upto promise
I got the N-Charge II after searching for alternate power sources for my laptop for quite a while. The biggest advantage that N-Charge offered was 5 hours of power - a very good thing when it comes to watching DVDs on planes when combined with the laptop's native battery.
I expected that N-Charge would last atleast 4.5 hours, and maybe drop to 4 hours with time - when watching DVDs on laptop. However, during initial use, the battery did not even make 3 hours when doing simple word processing and office work. It typically ran out in about 2.66 hours. This is with LCD brightness set to low, and not running any CD/DVD. I have an IBM T40 with 1GB RAM and Pentium M centrino.
Few other observations:
1. The quality of the connections was pretty solid as the reviewer before me mentioned
2. The Valence co. didnt respond to the emails I send them about some hi-pitched noise, that happened everytime I unplugged the battery from the power source. So this contradicts point made before of the high customer service over email. Maybe they are better on the phone.
3. Its power is rated at 12.8V and 4.050AH - something that isn't mentioned on their website. I found better power for T40 - 6.6AH and 10.8V - for $180 - and I can get it for cheaper through some deals. It doesnt offer the flexibility of N Charge - but seems to be a better value to me.
All and all, a disappointing product for $200, one that I will return.

5-0 out of 5 stars A note on the Electronic Fan's comment...
I experienced the same thing and all I did was stuck a length of Velcro strap over and across the connector, securing it underneath with the section of a tiny piece of facing hook tab and all is well once again. Velcro straps does wonders!

5-0 out of 5 stars I would recommend this over the OTHER brand!!!
I have both a NCharge and an Electroyava external battery and first off, I would like to say that NCharge has a far better customer service than the Canadian based Electoyava. You be the judge...

I send in my Electroyava for a broken tiny contact pin inside the battery end of the connector and it took Electrovaya nearly two months, a hundred bucks for replacement plus shipping cost, numerous emails and phone calls and then, dealing with the NY State based contact and starting all over again, then faxing my signature (that last one was unheard of from all my dealings online!!!) before I got a brand new replacement. They surely could have send me a replacement earlier instead of giving me the runaround and waited and waited.

Electroyava's tiny plug-in connection was secured only by the snug rubber edge that surrounded the whole battery- a tiny hole in the back within the rubber edge, and the contact pin could easily be wiggled, twisted, misaligned and break while the connection behind the NCharge is very, very beefy, firm and positive with no tiny little contact in the middle of some tiny black hole to break! In another word, NCharge battery's construction was designed well and with users in mind.

Meanwhile, I send a comment via email to Valance and their customer service called me back the next day. Find me another company that would do that!

Anyway, I love my NCharge battery and my only complain was those very fragile, tiny black plastic alignment tabs/guides flanking the connector. One broke off within days after I received the battery but it did not hamper its operation. I would recommend an NCharge over any other brand and a serious consideration when you are thinking of buying another factory battery as a backup! It might be a little more expensive initially but it is worth it in the long run.

I might recommend gluing a 99 cent, 2mm foam rubber mat from the craft store on top of the battery so your laptop would not slide around on top of it. Then again, you could use some Velcro tabs too.

Lets give Valance some more business so they could produce better and less expensive products for us consumers, I'd say.

4-0 out of 5 stars Does the job and does it well.
I have had this external battery for about a week now.Firstly, it is small and very thin. They ship it with stickable rubber stops so you can place it beneath your laptop without slippage.I personally don't find it that heavy but I can see how people with a notebook might get that impression.

As far as battery life goes, you can use it for a typical work day without any problems.Imagine never having to find a wall socket again.Furthermore, it is great not having to lug around long cables. All you have is the flat batter and a 6 inch cable that comes out the back. Also, you can use your laptop at full speed for the day instead of the sluggish performance that is required by most laptop batteries.

There is one dowside that I noticed. The attachement is not inclued with the battery itself. This means you will have to go to Valence's webpage and find the appropriate attachement for your laptop and buy that serperately (~$30).Furthermore, the cable attachement doesn't really "lock in" to the battery.I had it slip out on my once by accident while I was moving my laptop around. It hasn't happend since and it doesn't come out without a bit of effort. That being said it would be nice if they had something that snapped on and locked.

I wanted to put this up really quick.. not a great review, but a quick overview of my opinion.Hope it helps. ... Read more
