4-0 out of 5 stars 5 stars for the price, 4 overall
Great notebook! I had been hesitant given varied posted experience with Averatec, but this thing is solid.I get about 3 hours battery life with wireless on, so the AMD Sempron processor does a great job with power management.Speed is no problem for general use such as web browsing, Word, Excel, etc.Case is magnesium alloy, solid and nice looking.Wireless range is excellent with built in 802.11b/g NIC.Overall, very happy.

    4-0 out of 5 stars no 60 gb hard drive!!,no recoverydiscs !!
this is my second averatec, after the 3150.
screen brightness is improved, built in wireless is fine.
but be warned ,although it is advertised as 60 gb hard disk,
it only has a lousy 43 available.the rest is on an invisible
and unremovable hard drive partition, where the recovery software resides.this takes up almost a THIRD of valuable diskspace.and CANNOT be changed. There is also NO
recovery disk, and you cannot make one, because you cannot access the hidden partition.

i think this sucks.as i ,like many of you like my machine lean and mean!and want to make a clean install every couple of months
    so be warned.
    the rest works fine.

4-0 out of 5 stars Works well--as expected
I just purchased this not too long ago, so this is an interim report. It seems like a great machine for the budget buyer, though--which is how it is advertised.PC Mag gives it a "very good" rating and made it an editor's choice, and that was one of the things that helped me make my decision.Case doesn't seem to scratch...but these are laptops, and they're going move and get some wear and tear. The wireless worked immediately...it even picked up a signal my neighbor didn't intend for me to pick up.Dial-up connectivity was a snap, too.The DVD player works well, so does the music... it's not $2000 sound, but you're buying a laptop that's less than $1K.It beats the sound on my 1997 HP clone by miles.Works smoothly, shifts from program to program and no problems.Have not tried to burn a CD or DVD but have worked with everything else.I even like the "updated" version of Works, which is not a program I ever preferred to Word before (as a writer). My major point of contention is the screen quality, but I can play with that.Just haven't yet, because I've been spending too much time working, surfing the Net, and watching movies.

4-0 out of 5 stars I think it is fine
Have it 1 week. Looks and feels well made. Battery life 2.5 hrs.
    Good value. No problems

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Worth The Money
I hoped for a lot more from this laptop. It looks decent on paper but it's a very poor performing machine. It is so fragile I am afraid to pick it up. It performs all the basics like surfing and basic apps but can't run too many processes at the same time. The video and audio quality are poor. It came with no recovery disks or instructions. I can't get a decent wireless signal no matter how close I get. The plastic case scratches easily. Maybe for $500 I would give it 3 stars. I am returning it before the 2 week trial period expires. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars So much to offer
I shopped for a (under $1000) notebook for my wife basically for her digital photos and her Girl Scout files, I was very disappointed in what the local stores had to offer.

    PROS:

This laptop looks great, has a nice large keyboard, and the 15 inch XGA display is beautiful with up to 128MB shared memory!

The front 4-in-1 Media Card Reader is impressive and works flawlessly.

It comes with only 512MB ram, but is easily upgraded with PC2700 type (333mhz) 200-pin DDR memory.

The AMD Processor is quick and pushes this laptop to achieve the desired results (photo editing and word processing).

I turned it the first time and within a few minutes I was already surfing the web as it easily found my router, and my network.

The sound on this laptop is much better than all of the other similarly (and some higher) priced laptops I looked at.

We watched a DVD the first night and had absolutely no complaints (and this was still using only the original 256MB of memory)!

Comes loaded with Roxio CD burning software and Microsoft Works 7.0, and PowerDVD.

    CONS:

A bit larger/heavier than what I was originally shopping for, but I couldn't pass up on the great deal. And at 6.8 lbs, it's really not that heavy.

The video is NOT for gaming! But like I said, you'll have no problems watching movies and if you use the S-Video (TV Out) Port on a flat screen... WOW!

    SUMMARY:

We have nothing to complain about.

    All around great "budget" laptop.

This laptop will do everything except render the latest games.

    What a Bargain!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great value!
Like the previous reviewer, this is my first notebook/laptop as well. I bought it as an alternative to the Epson P2000 40GB photo storage unit (that's been sold out everywhere) to download pictures for an upcoming two-week vacation to France. I haven't regretted this decision and think it's even better solution for me overall in the long run.

Not only does this unit have twice the storage (80GB), but being a notebook computer I've also installed Adobe Photoshop CS2 which will enable me to process my images during the vacation instead of doing it all when I get back.My only extended use has been a three-day trip to Yosemite which was a great opportunity to see how this concept was going to work out.Being able to download 2+ GB of photo's per day using a Sandisk USB CF reader, see them on the 12.1" screen and also process the RAW files in CS2 was in a word... sweet!Even the memory hungry CS2 was responsive with the standard 512MB ram - although I'll probably upgrade to a 1GB at some point.

Important factors to me in considering which notebook to buy where screen quality, battery life and weight. The screen resolution and quality is quite "good", but not as great as the VAIO and some others.Battery life seems to run a little over 3hrs with continuous use and weighing a little over 4 lbs, it is light! The wifi works like a champ and connected easily with my D-Link unit at home. The built-in ethernet port is significantly faster as you'd expect. Although the touchpad and its software work well, I'm too used to using a mouse and also bought a USB mouse. This system seems to be well made and has a nice quality feel to it. The feel of the keyboard as far as notebooks/laptops go is more than adequate and easy to use.

Oh, and the iGO charger unit that I bought for auto/air/wall charging is also a great convenience factor to think about - one charger does it all.Finding a nice "sleeve" to simply protect the surface when it's being carried in a suitcase or backpack has been a challenge, but it looks like the 12" Apple iBook dimensions are close enough. We'll see...

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Notebook.
This is my first laptop. I got it at Circuit City for less than here at Amazon.

Battery life is good. The Intel Wireless-G adapter works fine with my Linksys WRT54G -- 48-54Mbps. WRT54GS was no faster. The 80GB hard drive is responsive. Loaded software was adequate. Has two video adapters so you can display on another monitor. Lacks a microphone (has a jack) and FireWire. Speakers are adequate but not great. Touchpad has some good features, but I added a Logitech USB notebook mouse. I have MS Office Pro, Visual Studio 2003 and SQL Server Personal installed and performance is fast.

Keyboard is small but usable. This is a nice small-footprint machine. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely a WONDERFUL computer.
I couldn't be happier with my new Averatec AV3270 EH1.Hard Drive is huge at 80 mg, if I need more I will just move the hidden partition to a DVD that I burned on the included DVD burner. The Batteries have run for 3.5 hours before giving up with no problems whatsoever. The monitor is great and the 4.5 lbs makes this my best purchase ever.Beats my 15.1" Toshiba all to heck. The sempron is just as fast to me as the Toshibas P4 and runs MUCH COOLER.I have had no problems with my Wireless Connections and it is running great.SOund is mediocre, but what do you expect.Keyboard is tight, but again, what do you expect?

    Amazon Product Description

    The Basics:
Overwhelming power is definitely not the strong suit of Electrovaya's SC800 Scribbler Tablet PC, so if you regularly challenge your notebook with high-end business software, the latest 3D games or demanding graphic design suites, you should look elsewhere. However, if you require extraordinary battery life and the freedom to input your data like you would with a pen and paper, the SC800 Scribbler may be just what you need. Incredibly compact, remarkably power efficient and equipped with both a detachable USB keyboard and a display screen that doubles as a writing/drawing pad, Electrovaya's midlevel tablet is an affordable and adaptable mobile solution for those who believe the pen is mightier than the keyboard.

    Processor:
At the heart of any computer lies the CPU (or processor), a massive collection of miniature transistors that governs the speed and power of the entire unit. Some of today's notebooks are equipped with high-end CPU's on par with those found in top-of-the-line desktop PCs, while others are quick enough only for basic duties such as word processing, email and the like. The SC800 Scribbler features an Ultra Low Voltage Mobile Intel Pentium III Processor–M operating at 866 MHz. In the world of modern notebooks, this is not a particularly potent processor. But for most common mobile tasks -- such as word processing, contact management, light 2D graphics, photo organization, email and Internet surfing, it is certainly sufficient. Moreover, it's incredibly easy on the batteries. More on that later.

    Memory:
Computers typically store information on their hard drive, but they keep frequently and recently accessed data in Random Access Memory (RAM) for faster retrieval. More RAM means more efficient computing, superior multitasking and less strain on your hard drive. The SC800 Scribbler incorporates 512 MB of RAM. This is the standard allotment for high-end notebooks, and a surprisingly generous amount in a unit of this size.

    Video:
CPU's are usually so busy doing basic calculations that they need help translating visual output, particularly that of 3D graphics, to the viewing screen. This is the duty of the graphics card (or graphics controller). When shopping for a computer, it's good to remember that a video controller with "dedicated" built-in video memory is preferable to one with "shared" video memory wherein the graphics controller borrows a portion of the all-important main system memory. This system's graphics controller is an Intel 830MG with a maximum of 48 MB of shared video memory. Thusly, the unit shouldn't be counted upon for 3D games or complex 3D animations, though it will efficiently display 2D and midlevel 3D applications and graphics.

    Display:
Being a subcompact computer, the SC800 Scribbler features an understandably smallish 10.6-inch XGA TFT display. But it's more than just a display -- it's also the screen you'll use to enter data with the enclosed stylus. Merely grab the stylus as you would a pen and write or draw as you would on traditional notepaper. Built-in handwriting recognition software takes care of the rest.

    Hard Disk:
In a time when some notebooks offer hard drives of 100 GB and more, the 30 GB hard drive inside the SC800 Scribbler may not seem overly spacious. However, in the miniscule world of ultra-compact tablets, 30 GB is a common size. Though you won't have enough room for a library of space-gobbling multimedia files, you will have space for a typical number of mobile apps and user-created files.

    Optical Drive:
An optical drive is essential in today's computing environment. A "CD-ROM" drive allows you to install CD-based applications and play music CDs. A "CD-RW" drive adds CD "burning", so you can also backup your important files to long-lasting discs and create personalized music CDs. With a DVD-ROM drive you can watch DVD movies. And with a DVD-RW drive, you can "write" home movies to durable discs and archive files to DVD (DVDs boast more than seven times the storage capacity of a CD). Some drives allow you to do a combination of all of these tasks. This system does not feature an optical drive in its stock configuration, though you can connect external CD and DVD drives via its two USB ports. It should be noted that the unit supports older USB 1.1 technology rather than the much faster new standard of USB 2.0.

    Audio:
The Scribbler SC800 is equipped with two miniature stereo speakers, a mini microphone jack and stereo mini headphone jack.

    Keyboard and Controls:
Most users will control the SC800 Scribbler by touching "virtual" controls displayed on the screen and utilizing the built-in scroll button, though a USB-connected keyboard is also enclosed.

    Connectivity and Expansion:
The SC800 Scribbler offers an assortment of ways to keep in touch, including a 56K modem for low-speed dial-up Internet and email access, a 10/100 Ethernet port for high-speed wired network and Internet, and an integrated 802.11b Wi-Fi wireless connection for cord-free e-communication at home, at the office or on the road via a local public hotspot. Other key amenities include two USB 1.1 ports (substantially slower than today's USB 2.0 standard) for plug and play devices such as external drives and digital cameras, an IEEE 1394 FireWire port (commonly used for quick data uploads from digital camcorders), and a PC Card Slot.

    Operating System and Software:
Electrovaya will pre-install a copy of Microsoft's Windows XP Tablet PC Edition operating system. Other applications include the pen-based business graphics software solution Corel Grafigo, and trial versions of Alias Sketchbook and FranklinCovey's Tablet Planner.

    Dimensions and Weight:
Many of today's most powerful notebooks are also the largest, weighing ten or twelve lbs or more and therefore too big and cumbersome for extensive, continuous traveling. These are often referred to as "desktop replacements". On the other extreme are "thin and lights" or "ultra-portables", super-miniaturized units that typically aren't as powerful as their larger brethren but weigh as little as two or three lbs. and will often fit comfortably inside a large purse. The SC800 Scribbler is exceptionally small and comfortable at a mere 3.9 lbs and just 10.8 by 8.9 by 1.0 - 1.1 inches.

    Power:
The unit is powered by a 4-cell Super Polymer Li-Ion Battery Pack that delivers a stunning 12 to 16 hours of run time between charges. Electrovaya says its entry-level Scribbler tablets are the only tablets on the market to offer an entire day's worth of mobility. ... Read more

    The Basics
Medion may not be the most celebrated manufacturer of computers on this side of the Atlantic, but it's been heavily involved in the European high-tech world for the better part of two decades. And that experience shows through clearly with this product, the Medion MD95154 15" Notebook PC. Not spectacular for its power or 3D graphics capabilities -- which are both quite pedestrian -- the MD95154 instead dazzles with its price point. Featuring goodies such as CD and DVD burning, wireless communication and a comfortably portable profile, the unit will set you back far less than what you might expect. For budget conscious consumers who need entry-level portable computing, the Medion MD95154 is a smart option.

    Processor
At the heart of any computer lies the CPU (or processor), a massive collection of miniature transistors that governs the speed and power of the entire unit. Some of today's notebooks are equipped with high-end CPU's on par with those found in top-of-the-line desktop PCs, while others are quick enough only for basic duties such as word processing, email and the like. The Medion MD95154 is equipped with an Intel Celeron M 330 processor operating at 1.4 GHz. Not to be confused with the original, now discontinued version of the Celeron, the Celeron M is more efficient and faster. Yet the Celeron remains Intel's entry-level CPU, delivering adequate power for the essentials but not enough for comparatively advanced tasks such as graphic design, high-end business applications or the latest games.

Computers typically store information on their hard drive, but they keep frequently and recently accessed data in Random Access Memory (RAM) for faster retrieval. More RAM means more efficient computing, superior multitasking and less strain on your hard drive. The Medion MD95154 incorporates 256 MB of RAM. This is the minimum recommended allotment for a modern notebook PC, and is not enough for those who indulge in frequent multitasking or complex applications.

    Video
CPU's are usually so busy doing basic calculations that they need assistance translating visual output to the viewing screen. This is the duty of the graphics card (or graphics controller). The best notebooks offer graphics cards with built-in "dedicated" memory as opposed to integrated graphics controllers that "share" the system's main memory. This unit features an integrated controller with shared memory and therefore will not smoothly display visually taxing applications such as high-end 3D games and animation packages.

    Display
Many entry-level notebooks are equipped with comparatively diminutive 12-inch display screens. Not so with the Medion MD95154, which features a spacious 15-inch display (similar screen size to a typical desktop monitor).

    Hard Disk
The Medion MD95154 features a 40 GB hard disk. Some of today's most advanced notebook hard drives are now approaching the 100 GB mark, yet 40 GB is adequate storage for those who utilize a typical number of basic applications and do not need to keep a burgeoning library of media files.

    Optical Drive
An optical drive is essential in today's computing environment. A "CD-ROM" drive allows you to install CD-based applications and play music CDs. A "CD-RW" drive adds CD "burning", so you can also backup your important files to long-lasting discs and create personalized music CDs. With a DVD-ROM drive you can watch DVD movies. And with a DVD-RW drive, you can "write" home movies to durable discs and archive files to DVD (DVDs boast more than seven times the storage capacity of a CD). Some drives allow you to do a combination of all of these tasks. This system features a DVD+/-RW/CD-RW drive through which you can do all of the above.

    Audio
The unit delivers satisfactory sound through its miniature stereo speakers and somewhat antiquated 16-bit audio chipset.

    Keyboard and Controls
You'll control your notebook via a standard keyboard and touch pad.

    Connectivity and Expansion
Though not ideally setup for interaction with today's broad range of futuristic peripherals, the Medion MD95154 is certainly equipped for the basics. Communication facilities include a 56K modem for low-speed dial-up Internet and email access, a 10/100 Mbit Ethernet port for high-speed wired network and Internet, and built-in wireless 802.11g LAN for fast cord-free e-communication at home, at the office or on the road via a public hotspot. Other key amenities include four high-speed USB 2.0 ports for plug and play devices such as external drives and digital cameras and an S-Video for high quality feeds to a television set or external monitor. Medion has not included an IEEE 1394 FireWire port (commonly used for quick data uploads from digital camcorders) or memory card reader (great for exchanging images and information with digital cameras, media players, and the like).

    Operating System and Software
Microsoft's Windows XP Home Edition operating system heads up the bundled software package, which also includes Microsoft's Works 7.0 productivity suite.

    Dimensions and Weight
Notebook computers are manufactured in a wide variety of sizes and weights. Many of today's most powerful notebooks are also the largest, weighing ten or twelve lbs or more and therefore too big and cumbersome for extensive, continuous traveling. These are often referred to as "desktop replacements". On the other extreme are "thin and lights" or "ultra-portables", super-miniaturized units that typically aren't as powerful as their larger brethren but weigh as little as two lbs and will often fit comfortably inside a large purse. The Medion MD95154 is slightly below average at 7.1 lbs and 12.8 by 11 by 1.5 inches.

    Power
The unit is equipped with a standard Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery. ... Read more
