    Amazon.com Product Description

Early Adopters Pick: April 2003. One of the slimmest and lightest notebook PCs in the world, the Sharp Actius MM10 Notebook PC is only 0.79 inches thick and weighs a mere 2.1 pounds. All that and it packs a blazingly fast 1GHz Crusoe processor, 256 MB RAM, 2 USB 2.0 ports and ibuilt-in IEEE 802.11b wireless LAN technology.

On the connection front, the Iomega Sync-powered SharpSync solution allows you to select folders or files on separate machines that you would like to keep in sync with the Actius MM10. 1-0 out of 5 stars Hard Drive Quality is a JOKE
Like others, I purchased the MM10 as a tech toy. Little did I know what a hassle owning it would be. Didn't have it two weeks before the hard drive crashed and they sent me a new unit. This was handled very quickly and with great support. The second MM10 lasted a little over a month when it displayed "no operating system found". The third unit didn't last a month when the hard drive crashed. They are telling me I installed a "hard drvie password" through the BIOS and that I need a new hard drive and new software costing $440!!!! I never set any password and the support people are unwilling to even send the unit back without charging me $70. Still in the middle of trying to get my money back for this junk. Be warned!

1-0 out of 5 stars Like my toys
The MM10 sure is sweet, but the support is as bad as I've seen. I'll never by a Sharp product after dealing with RUDE customer support and sales. After 3 conversations and all I spoke with were aloof and un-caring, the morale must be very low at this company.

3-0 out of 5 stars OK product, but won't boot from CD
I agree with the previous reviewers. This computer will not boot from an external CD, no matter what BIOS settings you choose. (I was using an external USB CD). I would have thought this is a fairly basic requirement and I'm convinced it's a BIOS bug. I havn't been able to find a patch.

Sharp, if you're reading this, it's a shame that such a nice product has been let down by a simple thing. I suggest you fix it quick, before you lose sales.

5-0 out of 5 stars geek toy
This one of the best geek toys out there! Wherever I go, people gawk at its size. Also great for those who want to travel lite.

In reply to "Be Careful!", I took a gander at the book supplied which tells how to change the BIOS settings. I too needed to boot from the CDROM.

5-0 out of 5 stars Coolest Computer Out There
If you are looking for an sleek and cool looking computer this is it. If you don't need a desktop replacement, but are instead looking for a lightweight and thin computer that will turn heads buy the Actius MM10. ... Read more

    Amazon.com Product Description

If you value portability over power and enjoy the advantages of wireless connectivity, Sharp's new PCUM32W Notebook PC may be exactly what you need. Super affordable and incredibly lightweight, the PCUM32W is perfect for those who perform basic computing tasks in a mobile or remote environment.

Measuring just 11.3 by 9.13 by .77 inches and tipping the scales at a scant 3.07 pounds, the PCUM32W is one of the smallest notebooks on the market. However, it is not particularly powerful. Driven by a Low Voltage 1 GHz-M Intel Pentium III processor, 256 MB of PC133 SDRAM memory (expandable to 512 MB) and an integrated Intel 830MG video chipset with 48 MB (shared) video memory, the system will handle general chores such as word processing, spreadsheets, Internet surfing and contact management, but can't be counted upon for high-end graphics, 3-D gaming and sophisticated business applications.

For storing your data, the unit is equipped with an adequate 40 GB hard disk, an optional external 3.5-inch diskette drive, and an external USB CD-ROM drive. In its stock configuration, CD burning and DVD playing and recording are not supported.

The PCUM32W features several surprisingly upscale amenities, including a large 12.1-inch XGA TFT display capable of 16 million colors, out-of-the-box wireless (IEEE 802.11b) LAN connectivity, a single IEEE 1394 FireWire port and two high-speed USB 2.0 ports for fast interaction with external devices such as scanners, optical drives and digital cameras. Sharp has also included a mono speaker, a built-in 56K modem for those times when low-speed wired communication is preferred, and a pre-installed copy of the Windows XP Professional operating system.

Battery life is estimated at 2.4 hours with the standard lithium-ion cell and a stunning 7.2 hours with an optional high-capacity battery. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Good features but mediocre sound and video card
We purchased the Sharp GP22W from Circuit City over Dell, HP, and Compaq because of the price and its features. It had a Pentium 4 2.2 GHz, 512 DDRAM, 4 USB 2.0 ports (SIS), 802.11b wireless, 40GB Fujitsu hdd, 15" sharp XGA, and SVideo Out. However, the LCD was already damaged right out of the box! 2 pixels were bad right in the middle of the screen, not the side or the bottom, but in the middle where you can see it clearly. Also, the sound quality is awful probably because of the onboard sound (AC 97). We played a DVD movie and the sound could not be heard with the volume up all the way. We tried the same movie in my Dell Inspiron 8000 and it was loud, very loud. Be aware that the video card is also part of the motherboard (SIS) with only 16MB of video memory. It should be enough for DVD playback, but it was jerky as soon as I played it out of the box. After turning off some programs, it worked smoothly but I still couldn't hear the sound, only mediocre sound. Overall, I recommend this computer only for basic features such as email, Internet, office word processing, spreadsheets, but not for DVD playback for lousy sound/video card. ... Read more

    Amazon.com Product Description

Though not a power user's dream rig, the petite Sharp Actius PC-AV18 Notebook PC is instead designed for those who need a conveniently portable light-duty mobile solution that won't break the bank. Exceedingly compact at a mere 11.1 by 9.4 by 1.04 inches and 3.89 lbs. (4.33 lbs with optical drive), the Actius PC-AV18 fits comfortably in a briefcase and even some handbags, and is ready for virtually any situation and environment.

Driven by a low voltage mobile AMD Athlon XP-M processor 1800+ running at 1.533 GHz and 256 MB of PC2100 DDR SDRAM memory (expandable to 768 MB), the Actius PC-MV14 will easily handle most standard 2D tasks such as word processing, spreadsheets, Internet surfing, contact management, and basic graphic design. However, it is not recommended for sophisticated business apps, high-end 2D graphics or complex multitasking. The system's integrated S3 Graphics ProSavage 8 video accelerator features just 32 MB of shared (not dedicated) memory, and is therefore adequate for older 3D games and midlevel 3D graphics and animation, but not for more advanced 3D tasks.

The unit's 40 GB hard disk sports lots of space for basic files and programs, but not quite enough for true multimedia mavens. Sharp has also included an adept optical drive that supports both CD playing and burning and DVD playing, thus allowing you to listen to audio discs, backup your data to digital media, and watch your favorite movies on the fold-open 12.1-inch active matrix display. DVD writing is not supported.

For such a small and affordable unit, the Actius PC-AV18 is very well connected. Communication options include a 100Base-TX/10Base-T LAN port for fast network interaction and a 56K modem for dial-up environments. Other amenities include a pair of fast USB 2.0 ports for data streaming with external devices such as scanners and digital cameras, an IEEE 1394 FireWire port (commonly used for downloading from digital camcorders), a touch-sensitive control pad with Intelli-wheel feature, an SPDIF audio out jack for high-quality digital sound, and a single mono speaker.

Estimated battery life is average at 2.9 hours with the included standard battery. With an optional second battery, that figure jumps to a commendable 5.8 hours. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Smallest with a CDRW/DVD and inexpensive but...
I purchased this laptop in April of 2004. My goal was to find the smallest and lightest laptop with a CDRW/DVD for the best price. My search led me to the Sharp AV18 and it met my needs well. I was able to forgive the slow speed since I knew ahead of time that the processor was slightly dated. The screen is great and I can live with the keyboard's slightly smaller size.

What makes me slightly sour is the fact that Sharp's support is completely nonexistent. First off, good luck in finding the web support area for this laptop. When you think you've found it, you haven't. Although the main sharp website lulls you into to thinking you are at the main support area for their laptops, a quick google tells me otherwise. I found the real support site by accident (It's listed only as an IP address and not a name). This is dumb. But what makes matters worse is that the support area only has a few FAQ's that are VERY basic and a few files that are already found on the 3rd CD that comes with the laptop. What? No updates? No new bios's? No new drivers? NOPE, just the same exact versions that came with the CD. This laptop is over a year old yet Sharp has done zero to correct some of the bugs in the Bios as well as provide the latest and greatest drivers. On top of that, my experience with calling in to support has been less than stellar. Yes, they answered the phone right away but all of my questions were "beyond what they could provide". Dare to ask about the Mini-PCI slot on the back or the card that is in there (It's the win-modem by the way. Information courtesy of the FCC's site) and you'll get rebuffed quickly. In fact, they don't want you to know anything about the laptop. Just use it the way we tell you to and don't ask questions.

To be fair, I have been satisfied with the laptop and I love the size and weight. I just wish it was a Toshiba or IBM as I have learned to appreciate a good support website and a willingness to help me with my questions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great little machine, I bought two.
After much shopping, this had all of the latest features that I wanted at the right price. Very reliable and I find myself using a computer much more now with the portability it gives. With the weight down to about 4 lbs., 40 Gb drive, USB 2.0 and a well thought out list of software utilities already loaded, it is the best computer I have ever owned. Nice build and rugged. I carry it room to room at home and on my camping trips. Great for downloading images from your digital cameras, even to edit my mini DV videos. Though the keyboard is a little awkward, I just plug in a keyboard and mouse at the USB to solve that when I have a lot of typing to do. If not available at Amazon, there are other sources that give good prices if you shop around.

4-0 out of 5 stars great little computer
I'm very happy with this computer,, I love it
great little machine for the money and it's light!!!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice, Light Machine at a Great Price
My Sharp PC-AV18 is a nice little machine. Good performance, reliable (so far), decent features, and light as all get out. Overall, it seems well built, although one could justly accuse the keyboard of being a bit on the flimsy side. What sold me, however, was the price. Sony charges about twice as much for a comparable unit! If you are looking for a light laptop that won't deplete your bank account, you should check this one out. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Quick and great for Graphics
I bought this laptop as a stand alone computer to work with Photoshop and other graphics programs along with a Wacom tablet. I love it. The battery life is short, though, so if that's a consideration, beware. I get about 45 mins. off my battery. But, the built-in card slots for Sony memory sticks, compact flash cards, smartmedia, etc. make this a great choice if you have multiple products in addition to this laptop. I love mine. It's very fast, and also good with games. The monitor is very bright and clear. ... Read more
