Amazon Product Description

The Basics:
While clearly not the most powerful portable computer on the market, Acer's entry-level TMC104Ti Tablet PC is nevertheless convenient, ultra-flexible and affordable. Small and lightweight for maximum portability, the unit also offers total input freedom. Users who prefer traditional data entry may take advantage of the integrated 84-key keyboard with scroll feature and programmable touchpad. Those who prefer "handwriting" via digital ink can simply use the enclosed stylus to freehand sketch their ideas on the system's swiveling, flip-open 10.4-inch LCD screen. And for those who'd rather speak than write, the TMC104Ti Tablet also supports voice recognition. If power and speed aren't your priorities but mobility, input versatility and your budget are, the TMC104Ti Tablet may be just what you're looking for.

Processor:
At the heart of any computer lies the CPU (or processor), a massive collection of miniature transistors that governs the speed and power of the entire unit. Some of today's notebooks are equipped with high-end CPU's on par with those found in top-of-the-line desktop PCs, while others are quick enough only for basic duties such as word processing, email and the like. The TMC104Ti Tablet features an Intel Mobile Pentium III-M operating at 900 MHz. In the world of modern notebooks, this is not a particularly potent processor. But for most common mobile tasks -- such as word processing, contact management, light 2D graphics, photo organization, email and Internet surfing, it is sufficient. Moreover, it's easy on the batteries. More on that later.

Memory:
Computers typically store information on their hard drive, but they keep frequently and recently accessed data in Random Access Memory (RAM) for faster retrieval. More RAM means more efficient computing, superior multitasking and less strain on your hard drive. The TMC104Ti Tablet incorporates 256 MB of RAM. This is currently considered the minimal allotment for a notebook, sufficient for basic duties but far less ideal for RAM-hungry applications such as games, multimedia, etc.

Video:
CPU's are usually so busy doing basic calculations that they need help translating visual output, particularly that of 3D graphics, to the viewing screen. This is the duty of the graphics card (or graphics controller). A graphics controller with "dedicated" built-in video memory is preferable to one with "shared" video memory wherein the graphics controller borrows a portion of the all-important main system memory. The budget-conscious Lynx 3DM+ graphics controller installed inside the TMC104Ti Tablet is integrated to the mainboard and features just 8 MB of shared video memory. Therefore, the unit is not suitable for anyone who deals with applications such as 3D games or 3D graphics design.

Display:
Being a subcompact computer, the TMC104Ti Tablet features an understandably smallish 10.4-inch XGA TFT display. But it's more than just a display -- it's also the screen you'll use to enter data with the enclosed stylus. Merely grab the stylus as you would a pen and write or draw as you would on traditional notepaper. Built-in handwriting recognition software takes care of the rest.

Hard Disk:
In a time when some notebooks offer hard drives of 100 GB and more, the 30 GB hard drive inside the TMC104Ti Tablet may not seem overly spacious. However, in the miniscule world of ultra-compact tablets, 30 GB is not an uncommon size. Though you won't have enough room for a library of space-gobbling multimedia files, you will have space for a typical number of mobile apps and user-created files.

Optical Drive:
An optical drive is essential in today's computing environment. A "CD-ROM" drive allows you to install CD-based applications and play music CDs. A "CD-RW" drive adds CD "burning", so you can also backup your important files to long-lasting discs and create personalized music CDs. With a DVD-ROM drive you can watch DVD movies. And with a DVD-RW drive, you can "write" home movies to durable discs and archive files to DVD (DVDs boast more than seven times the storage capacity of a CD). Some drives allow you to do a combination of all of these tasks. This system does not feature an optical drive in its stock configuration, though external CD and DVD drives can be connected via its two USB ports. It should be noted that the unit supports older, slower USB 1.1 technology rather than the much faster new standard of USB 2.0.

Audio:
The TMC104Ti Tablet is equipped with an integrated mono speaker, a built-in microphone, and a mono line in and out.

Keyboard and Controls:
Most users will control the unit by touching "virtual" controls displayed on the screen and utilizing the built-in scroll button, though a USB-connected keyboard is also enclosed.

Connectivity and Expansion:
The TMC104Ti Tablet offers an assortment of ways to keep in touch, including a 56K modem for low-speed dial-up Internet and email access, a 10/100 Ethernet port for high-speed wired network and Internet, and 802.11b wireless technology for cord-free e-communication at home, at the office or on the road via a local public hotspot. Other key amenities include two USB 1.1 ports (substantially slower than today's USB 2.0 standard) for plug and play devices such as external drives and digital cameras, an IEEE 1394 FireWire port (commonly used for quick data uploads from digital camcorders), a PC Card Slot and a SmartCard interface.

Operating System and Software:
Acer will pre-install a copy of Microsoft's Windows XP Tablet PC Edition operating system.

Dimensions and Weight:
Many of today's most powerful notebooks are also the largest, weighing ten or twelve lbs or more and therefore too big and cumbersome for extensive, continuous traveling. These are often referred to as "desktop replacements". On the other extreme are "thin and lights" or "ultra-portables", super-miniaturized units that typically aren't as powerful as their larger brethren but weigh as little as two or three lbs. and will often fit comfortably inside a large purse. The TMC104Ti Tablet is exceptionally small and comfortable at a mere 3.2 lbs (with primary battery but no optical drive) and just 9.9 by 8.2 by 1.1 inches in diameter.

Power:
Under ideal conditions, the unit's lithium-ion battery will deliver up to 3.0 hours usage. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the very best but not well known
OK I confess, I worked for Acer and I'm familiar with the high quality; durability; innovative products and great support they have been quietly building and becoming know for over the last five years. OK who is Acer? They are the company since 1972 (as MultiTech) who built, in addition to their own high quality line of servers, notebooks, monitors & desktops; IBM, Dell & other desktop, server and notebook products. They have been part of Acer Labs Inc, AOpen, etc. They bought Altos (pioneer server & desktop company) & Texas Instrument (notebooks & Texas service center). Unfortunately I left the company before this Tablet product was a twinkle in Stan Shih's eye (Acer CEO). When I felt it was time to give up my Travel Mate 610, I researched all notebooks in my price range and found this Tablet (TMC104CTi) offered more functionality, more features, improved usabilty and better value than the other brands both notebook and tablet. It has built in 802.11 wireless (the better to drink your cappuccinos with), 10/100 & data/fax modem. The display "converts" from notebook to a Tablet mode. It has over 3 hour battery life, an external FireWire DVD-CDRW, a smart card reader (for security) and a 40gb hard drive. What more can I say except, its the best computer I've owned and the most fun to use. ... Read more

It's also quite a bit more sophisticated than Acer's first-generation tablet, the C104CTi. Driving the system is a 900 MHz Ultra-Low-Voltage Intel Pentium M processor with a stunning 1024 KB Level 2 cache, 512 MB SDRAM memory (double that of last year's model) and an Intel 855GM graphics chipset with Intel Extreme Graphics 2 technology and 64 MB shared memory. The system features two ultra-fast USB 2.0 ports for connection of plug and play peripherals, a single FireWire port for attaching external devices such as digital video cameras, a spacious 40 GB hard disk and a detachable CD-RW/DVD drive through which you can archive data, install applications, burn and play audio CDs and enjoy the latest DVD movies.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't get this one...go for the Toshiba instead
I work for the local school distticts IS department, we recently bought 286 of these and they have been nothing but a problem since day one. The monitor latch often breaks, the wireless does not work worth crap, and the screen is very dark and hard to read. Altough the Toshiba cost's only a few hundred dollars more, it is WELL worth the extra money. Don't waste it on the Acer.

3-0 out of 5 stars Rude, obnoxious support
The computer works fine, small, quite fast. Heat seems to be a problem. The phone support is useless and the person who called himself Brad shouldn't have any contact with costumers- he is disgrace for Acer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
Fantastic, very thin and light, power-saving, great performace(even though its lower clock, it has a performance comparable to a pentium 4) ! A great deal ! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good low-end first-edition Convertible Tablet PC
Get ready for a fundamentally new type of notebook computer. The introduction of the Tablet PC will change and enhance the way you use your computer. While the official launch of Windows XP Tablet Edition isn't until November 7th, I located a vendor selling the new Acer convertible Tablet PC a couple of weeks ago.

I reviewed the TMC102Ti. The TMC102T simply has a few less options (Ti has built-in wireless), which I have highlighted in the specs below. The Acer TMC102Ti Tablet has impressed me beyond my wildest dreams. I must admit that I had never owned an Acer notebook prior to this purchase. And while I've heard mixed reviews of their reliability and support, I feel confident this new Tablet PC is going to hold up well. I purchased this new Acer Tablet just over two weeks ago and could not imagine going back to a normal notebook. But don't take my word for it. Read the full review and take the plunge yourself. You will not be disappointed.

Features

The Acer TMC102T Tablet notebook is fully-loaded:

800MHz Pentium III processor
20GB hard drive (Ti has 30GB)
128MB RAM (Ti has 256MB)
Windows XP Tablet Edition (which is just a superset of XP Professional)
8MB Video RAM
Two USB 1.1 ports
Firewire port
RJ-45 and RJ-11 ports
VGA port
Audio in/out ports
Two types of writing instruments (one fits into the computer, the other is a bit larger)
10.4" screen with 1024 X 768 resolution
Small carrying case (with second pen holder)
AC Charger

Travel Adapters for your charger
External USB 24X CD-Rom drive
In addition, Acer has added several utility buttons along the top of the keyboard to allow me to program my favorite applications (including dedicated keys for email and the internet).

Amazon.com Product Description

Up until recently, one truism has existed with all tablet-based notebooks -- they're small, with a small display screen. Most are also comparatively underpowered. Not so with Acer's distinctly upscale TravelMate C301 Tablet PC. Though it doesn't sport the same ultra-lightweight design as many of its smaller tablet peers, the TravelMate C301 combines many of the perks of a tablet with the larger display screen and processing power of a traditional notebook, and houses it all in one convenient package.

At 12.8 by 10.7 by 1.4 inches and 6.2 pounds with optical drive installed, the TravelMate C301 is indeed heavier and larger than the typical tablet but less bulky than the majority of standard notebooks. Unlike most tablets, however, the unit features a generous 14.1-inch XGA TFT LCD display (1024 x 768 maximum resolution) and a high-end Intel Centrino-based CPU.

One of the chief reasons for buying a tablet is its input flexibility, and in this regard the TravelMate C301 certainly doesn't disappoint. Users who prefer traditional data entry may take advantage of the integrated keyboard with scroll feature and programmable touchpad, while those who prefer "handwriting" via digital ink can utilize the enclosed stylus and eraser to freehand sketch their ideas on the display screen.

But there's far more to like than input versatility in this, one of Acer's most advanced tablets. Driving the unit is a snappy 1.5 GHz Intel Pentium M CPU, 512 MB of DDR SDRAM memory, and an Intel Extreme Graphics 2 video chipset with 64 MB of shared (not dedicated) video memory. As such, the system will suffice for practically any typical mobile or midlevel desktop task, but may have trouble efficiently displaying high-end 3-D games and animations.

The system features today's most desirable connectivity options, including two ultra-fast USB 2.0 ports for plug and play peripherals, a single FireWire port for attaching external devices such as digital video cameras, an RJ-45 LAN port for fast network access and Internet interaction, a low-speed dial-up 56K modem, and an 802.11b wireless LAN with internal antenna. Data handling components include an average-sized 40 GB hard disk and a detachable CD-RW/DVD drive through which you can archive data, install applications, burn and play audio CDs and enjoy the latest DVD movies.

Bundled software includes Microsoft's Windows XP Tablet PC Edition operating system and a wide variety of general and tablet-specific utilities. Battery life is estimated at a commendable 3.0 hours in ideal conditions. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Died early
I purchased my Acer from Amazon with great anticipation. I had read a lot of reviews about the various features and it seemed very promising. My son had also purchased one and he was pleased with it. Mine came and I was very excited - but the fun lasted for a very short time. The Microsoft Tablet software (Journal and the free download trial version of OneNote)while being hyped as great - weren't. And so my productivity dreams vanished within a couple days. Then the screen became unpredictable, and in a short time I could not get it to work at all. I returned the unit to Amazon and now wonder if I will ever try another tablet pc. Probably not, because the current software is designed for scribblers and note takers not organized document makers. I really do hope that some company will take the tablet seriously enough to make it lightweight, cool, bright, and powerful enough to do the work of regular notebook. And also for Microsoft to work on a tablet pc word processor at least a little bit like Word. ... Read more

Those who prefer "handwriting" via digital ink can utilize the enclosed stylus to freehand sketch their ideas on the system's swiveling flip-open 10.4-inch LCD screen. It also features Intel's Centrino technology for improved battery life, remote wireless communication and substantially more efficient CPU usage than non-Centrino systems.

Driving the TravelMate C110 is an Ultra-Low-Voltage 1 GHz Intel Pentium M processor with a stunning 1024 KB Level 2 cache. Acer has matched this midlevel Centrino-based CPU with a minimal alloent of 256 MB DDR SDRAM memory (upgradeable to 2 full GB) and an Intel Extreme Graphics 2 3-D video controller with 64 MB of shared (not dedicated) graphics memory. Make no mistake -- the unit is not ready for heavy-duty business multitasking or high-end 3-D animation or games. It is, however, perfect for day-to-day general computing, particularly out-of-the-office field applications where its efficiency, size and wireless design really comes in handy.

Amazon.com Product Description

No matter how you prefer to input your data, the Compaq TC1000T Tablet PC has you covered. If you favor traditional methods, the TC1000T is packaged with a flip-open keyboard with isolated, inverted T-cursor control keys and right control key. If you'd rather work with a stylus and interactive tablet, the unit allows you to write and store information, sketch pictures and annotate documents via your own handwriting. Versatile and adaptable, the TC1000T is ready to handle any situation and user preference.

Certainly Compaq has designed its latest tablet PC with portability in mind. Tipping the scales at a mere 3 pounds and sporting a miniscule .8-inch diameter (with keyboard detached), the TC1000T is one of the lightest and slimmest computers currently on the market.

Surprisingly, this level of mobility does not come at the expense of performance. The system is equipped with a low-heat 1 GHz Transmeta Crusoe TM5800 processor (512 KB Level 2 cache), 256 MB of Random Access Memory (upgradeable to 768), a 16 MB nVidia GeForce2Go video graphics processor, and a spacious 30 GB hard drive. Although this setup won't suffice for serious gamers or graphic designers, it's more than enough for standard mobile computing tasks and business and home applications.

The distinctive TC1000T sports several other desirable amenities, including a bright 10.4-inch XGA TFT display, a 56K modem and integrated wireless LAN for trouble-free networking and Internet access in any environment, and an array of Command Control Buttons for one-touch access to several important applications and utilities. Multimedia features include an integrated 16-bit Sound Blaster Pro-compatible stereo audio processor, two integrated speakers and microphone, external volume controls and a stereo headphone-out. The system's internal main Lithium-Ion battery delivers long life between charges. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Consider this:
Before you resist buying this for it's lack of connectivity for installing, consider flash drives, also known as jump drives. These miniscule drives plug directly into a computer's USB port, and act as a sort of hyper-floppy. If you own another computere and are considering this one, you can simply load anything onto a flash drive from your desk or laptop and then plug it into the Tablet. Even if just installing software is not enough to warrant the cost of a flash/jumpdrive, consider that these drives make file transfers a breeze, and you can store "sensitive" or vital files on the jump/flah drive and keep it in your pocket, thus eliminating the possibility that anyone using your tablet gets access to any files you care to place on the jump/flash drive.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pros overweigh the cons, yet it needs some more work
I've been using my (first) Tablet PC by Compaq for a little over two weeks now, and the results are showing. Some of the comments that other reviewers have are totally right on: indeed, the tablet heats up a bit (now, I wouldn't have it sit on my lap, regardless). Also, there's a certain degree of instability inherent to the system when you take if off its docking station without powering off; and, finally, true that the only way to install software on it is downloading it or... the way it was meant to be done, through a CD-RW/DVD-rom drive as part of its docking station.

Truth be told, the Tablet PC cannot be without its companion docking station for "desktop work" purposes. Also, highly recommended is a companion second screeen (flat or traditional, doesn't matter). It is neither your typical power workstation, in spite of a not-too-slow CPU courtesy of Linus Torvald's Transmeta, however it will handle several relatively common applicaions simultaneously open (Outlook, Explorer, Word, Excel... you get the picture). Now, the true beauty of this piece of gear lies in its light weight, readability (and "writeability" in digital ink) and the fact that it comes wireless ready, so it makes it an ideal companion to take advantage of the increasing number of hot spots across the nation. Sit at a Borders library sipping a cup of coffee, while taking digital notes in your own handwriting and be able to search your notes later (as you would normally, using Windows' search capabilities); read an article on the 8.5"x11" screen, which makes it a not-so-distant relative of the magazine already (except for the bulk, of course)... in general, it's a very nice piece of hardware.

To me it's been a jump and it still takes a bit of getting used to, yet, I can appreciate the step in technology evolution that the Tablet PC represents. I have yet to try other ones, but I'll give four stars to this one. The pros overweigh the cons in my book, but it still needs some more work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tablet PC is Great!
The transition from my IBM T23 to my Compaq TC 1000 has been painless and after a week and a half the TC 1000 has become my primary computer. After reading numerous reviews of TPCs I felt compelled to write my own. If you are considering a tablet do not be put off by all the early adopter talk! The product works very well and is hands down the best computer I have ever used. I chose the Compaq because I wanted the convertible features of a traditional laptop with the flexibilty to ditch the keyboard and go "slate" when I wanted to. I am using the pen to write this on my couch through a wireless connection - I love it! Seriously, if you are considering an "ultra-portable" laptop and you don't take a good hard look at the TPCs you're crazy! With the Compaq, Toshiba and the Acer there is no excuse to buy a regular ultraportable for nearly the same price. I get three and a half hours of battery, the processor, while slower than my T23, is fast enough to run all my apps without any lag and the pen input is surprisingly accurate and easy to use (I am a Pocket PC user too and I expected the performance to be like Transcriber - the TPC is light years beyond). This is an excellent product and as a user the Tablet PC is without a doubt the future of computing!

1-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't stand up to real life application.
The one thing that this unit has going for it is its size. That's about it. With no disc drive, you can only run and install new programs with an external drive. The keyboard is cheap feeling and flimsy. I am afraid that it will break with its cheap plastic snaps. This is basically a large PDA with an attachable keyboard. It is also noticeably slower than other models I have used (It takes about an hour to load an e-book into Windows Journal).

My biggest complaint however is heat. Sit this baby on your lap for a half hour and you will start to feel very uncomfortable from the near scalding heat. Given that it is a tablet, the unit should sit on your arm or lap without too much heat. Battery life is about average for a laptop (2-3 hours).

3-0 out of 5 stars Not too shabby
Very neat device.
Handwriting recognition works pretty well, but may take some getting use to if you are a Palm user, as I am. Can be tedious at times... but far easier to use than the Virtual Keyboard option.

Don't liek the fact that it has no DVD/CD/3.5" floppy drives. The two USB ports can be used to add those drives externally but then it defeats the portability...

Love the pen... beats a mouse, although I can't see playing realy games with it.

Speed is a bit sluggish at times.

The fold/swivel to a normal keyboard is alos very nice.

Overall it is a nice device but lacks some serious items that would make it a laptop replacement. Not worth the steep price just to be able to fold it and use a pen with it. I could justify paying about half the price... ... Read more

Early Adopters Pick: October 2002. First convertible tablet PC (screen swings up so it can be used like a laptop); comes with integrated wireless connection, 30 GB hard drive, Windows XP Professional, and 800 MHz Intel Pentium III processor.

Are you tempted by the wizardry of computing devices that let you enter data by writing with a stylus, but reluctant to give up a full-size keyboard for tasks better suited to typing? Acer’s TMC102T TravelMate convertible tablet PC delivers a no-compromises solution that unites today’s notebook PC with a futuristic tablet computer in a stylish, slim, all-in-one mobile design.

The TMC102T is ideal for workers who spend time away from their desks taking notes in meetings or at a job site. The unit’s bright, sharp 10.4-inch, active-matrix display with digitizer offers 1,024 x 768 resolution at 16 million colors. The display automatically converts from notebook to tablet mode when rotated.

5-0 out of 5 stars The perfect answer to my work problems.
I like my Acer Tablet PC a whole lot. I had been doing everything on Palm and Handspring products but their lack of storage space was really holding me back. My Acer does everything I need it to do at work with ease, and it doesn't seem to mind working in harsh enviroments (construction sites). The laptop/combo feature makes for a very well rounded tool. The Windows Tablet OS has been rock solid, which was a pleasant surprise in such a new product. My only complaint is the USB ports are not 2.0, it does have FireWire though. My Acer Tablet is now over a month old and has been running 8-12 hours a day, 5 days a week, and a few hours on the weekends with no problems. I use a Targus CoolPad with the Acer.

5-0 out of 5 stars NICE!!!!
We got this computer for Christmas and WOW! I looked at tablet pc's for a while and had decided on either the Toshiba or the Acer because they are convertible-meaning they have an attached keyboard. For some reason I could just picture the keyboard getting missplaced and the unit sailing across the room when it couldn't be found . While the Toshiba has some really nice features, (bigger hard drive, more included memory and larger processor), so does the Acer-included CD-Rom drive, 2 included batteries and longer battery life, and a smaller/lighter size. And since the Toshiba's larger processor translates into more heat as well, it stays cooler.

We got this computer because my son is always getting assignments back with the request "please type this". While the handwriting recognition part of it is coming along and helping neaten the handwriting, he simply puts on the Palm character recognizer for Grafitti and away he goes. It fits easily into his backpack and is not difficult to carry or bulky. My husband enjoys being able to work on reports, etc while sitting in front of the TV watching football games, and I like reading the latest book, on the tablet screen. Once you get used to the stylus, it works lots faster than the mouse, or you always have the keyboard.

If I could give it 4 1/2 stars, I would because there are a few minuses. It is really designed more for *on-the-go* than for heavy based computer graphics-you really need a faster processor/more memory for that, but that translates into more heat, weight and size. The people at Acer will admit that a newer version with a brand new type of chip and more memory is in the pipeline for 2003, but because this chip wasn't ready for the launch of the tablet pc's, they went with what they could get. It doesn't have USB 2.0 that I know of, and the included USB CD-ROM must be plugged in. The newer models come with the wireless network turned on and to use an Ethernet based LAN, this must be turned off-but they don't tell you that. Lastly, the keyboard mouse only works in Landscape mode, so if your screen is set to portrait you must imagine your commands turned 90 degrees.

But still, we love it and will probably be buying a second one as soon as the newer model comes out.

1-0 out of 5 stars Clunky.... slow... and well... pointless.
One of my friends purchased one of these and lent it to me for a few days so I could try it out. I did and just couldn't have been less impressed. There are several things wrong with the system itself from the slow processor speed of 800 MHz to only 8 megabytes of video RAM. The system was very slow to open most applications and for anyone looking to run any games - just give up. It doesn't have the speed or video to run anything graphics intense.

It seems the big selling point of this computer is you can write on the screen and with handwriting recognition it will be able to save you from typing it in. I don't know about most people but I type much fast than I write - and proofing it is easier too (since the handwrighting recognition is still a bit fuzzy). How many places are there where you can't just type information in on a normal laptop? I can't think of any.

Another point that I'm a little fuzzy on is the CD-Rom drive. Does it come with the unit or not? No one seems to know (my friend wasn't sure if it came with it or was in the "extras" package he purchased) and it's not listed as coming with the unit. Then again - why not a CD-R since the one that may come with it only plugs into one of the USB ports? There's no way to get information out of the unit unless you hook it up to the internet or another computer and email it to someone with a disk drive or cd burner. That's just plain shortsighted.

Overall I just wasn't impressed with the unit and I think for the two plus thousand dollars you should get more than an oversized and slow personal organizer.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great first-edition high end convertible Tablet PC
Overview

Get ready for a fundamentally new type of notebook computer. The introduction of the Tablet PC will change and enhance the way you use your computer. While the official launch of Windows XP Tablet Edition isn't until November 7th, I located a vendor selling the new Acer convertible Tablet PC a couple of weeks ago.

Features

The Acer TMC102Ti Tablet notebook is fully-loaded:

800MHz Pentium III processor
30GB hard drive
256MB RAM
Windows XP Tablet Edition (which is just a superset of XP Professional)
Built-in 802.11b
8MB Video RAM
Two batteries
Two USB 1.1 ports
Firewire port
RJ-45 and RJ-11 ports
VGA port
Audio in/out ports
Two types of writing instruments (one fits into the computer, the other is a bit larger)
10.4" screen with 1024 X 768 resolution
Small carrying case (with second pen holder)
AC Charger
Travel Adapters for your charger
External USB 24X CD-Rom drive
In addition, Acer has added several utility buttons along the top of the keyboard to allow me to program my favorite applications (including dedicated keys for email and the internet). In addition, I love the fact that Acer has added a button to toggle the 802.11b wireless on and off. This is one of those features that really is great to have (instead of having to open the wireless software and shut it down using your mouse).

The touchpad has a nice browser scrolling four-way button, but I don't use it much.

Amazon.com Product Description

No matter how you prefer to input your data, the Gateway M275X Tablet PC has you covered. If you favor traditional methods, the M275X is packaged with a flip-open full-size keyboard. If you'd rather work with a stylus, the unit's swiveling display allows you to write and store information, sketch pictures and annotate documents via your own handwriting. Versatile, adaptable, compact and substantially more powerful than the majority of competing tablet PCs, the Gateway M275X is ready to handle virtually any situation and user preference.

Certainly Gateway has designed the unit with portability in mind. Tipping the scales at just 5.7 pounds and measuring 12.6 by 10.8 by a mere 1.1 inches, the Gateway M275X is larger than many tablets but substantially slimmer and more lightweight than the notebook norm.

Gateway has turned to Intel's new Centrino platform to power the system. Centrino, a technology built upon a triad of three interconnected elements -- an Intel Pentium M CPU (with 1 full GB of Level 2 cache), an Intel 855 chipset, and a cord-free network connection -- allows portable computers to be smaller, more power efficient, and faster than their rated CPU speeds might indicate. The Gateway M275X features a snappy 1.4 GHz Pentium M processor and a smallish alloent of 256 MB DDR SDRAM as its power base, and an Intel Extreme Graphics 2 3-D graphics chipset with 32 MB shared (not dedicated) video memory to drive its 3-D visuals. Consequently, the unit is ready for most standard mobile 2-D tasks but will have some troubles in intense multitasking situations and when trying to smoothly display midlevel and high-end 3-D apps and games.

The distinctive Gateway M275X sports several other desirable amenities, including a generous 14-inch XGA TFT Active Matrix display (large by tablet standards), a 56K modem, a 10/100 Ethernet connection, and an 802.11b wireless networking card for trouble-free LAN and Internet access in any environment. The enclosed 40 GB hard disk is of average size, and the system's optical drive handles CD playing and burning and DVD playing but doesn't support DVD writing. Connectivity options include two high-speed USB 2.0 ports, a FireWire port (typically used for downloading from digital camcorders) and an integrated 4-in-1 card reader for linking with memory cards from PDAs, digital cameras, and the like.

The bundled software package features Microsoft's Windows XP Tablet Edition, Microsoft Works 7.0 and a 90-day free trial with the respected Norton AntiVirus utility. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Killer Computer
Are you looking for an awesome deal on a laptop? Need the best Tablet PC on the market? Are you a student that has difficulty with there typing skills? Are you an office worker that thinks they can be more productive if they didn't have to type everything? Do you need an excellent computer, but don't want to pay $2,000* + on a computer that's not as good as the M275? If you answered yes to any of these questions than the Gateway** M275 convertible tablet pc is the right choice for you. Now you're probably saying ok here's a laptop reasonably priced nothing special hmm... next! WRONG the M275 unlike most tablets that don't have built in keyboards and, unlike most laptops that don't offer handwriting recondition the M275 offers the best of both worlds, when you first open it up it's a normal laptop, then all you have to do is turn the screen, push a button and Boom... it instantly becomes a tablet. What is a tablet you ask, a tablet is a special type of computer with special software made by Microsoft*** that offers converted handwriting recondition, that means that with a special pen (Included) you can write on the screen press a button and BOOM!!! It converts your handwriting. As well as offering handwriting recondition it also offers a 14" screen, something only offered by two manufacturers of tablets (Gateway** and Acer**) in addition it also offers a memory card reader so if you are going on vacation and you're bringing along your digital camera you don't have to pack a cable for your digital camera (if it supports SD, Memory Stick**, or Smart Media) This is why I think the M275 is a excellent system!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Next Revolution in Mobile Computing- I Love This Tablet!
Versatile, lightweight, portable, durable and powerful.

I love this thing! I've had my Gateway tablet for about two months now and it's already changed the way I use my computer for both business and fun.

First of all: Some other reviewers had complaints about the latch breaking... mine is still working just fine! It's easy to get carried away having fun with such a cool new technology, but you have to remember that this is NOT a toy! It's a powerful hybrid computing system that gives you an edge over both laptop AND tablet PC users. If you screw around with it of course it's going to break- just like any number of other delicate parts on your laptop. The latch is built well and works perfectly if you make sure not to force it.

For the guy who broke his after 20 days... you should have gotten an extended warranty! I highly reccomend the extended warranty on this because, like any other advanced technology, you're going to want to protect yourself from any repair or replacement costs you might face should something go wrong. I didnt get the extended warranty because this is a bad computer... I got the extended warranty because it's the smart thing to do!

I love my tablet because it's smaller than a notebook but still has a full-size keyboard. Basically you get the best of both worlds with this one!

I can now do all of my graphic design work by sitting the computer on a desk or my lap and writing directly on the screen... and then swivel the screen out so I have acces to the keyboard when I need to write an e-mail or chat online... this is brilliant!!

I have this set of CDs I recently purchased that contains materials and resources I'm studying for an upcoming licensing exam. Before, I had to sit at my PC for hours a day reading this stuff. Now I just throw the CD in the tablet PC and I can recline or relax at ANY angle and I'm able to hold the tablet whichever way is comfortable. If you ever use your laptop to read, watch movies, or even just surf message boards then you'll love the M275X.

I can't say enough good things about this computer. It's made working when I travel so much easier. Tablets are so far superior to laptops in terms of ease of use and comfortable viewing/ operating options. And this tablet takes it a step further by including the ONLY thing that tablets were missing- a keyboard! Maybe the only downside is all the attention it attracts when I'm using it at Starbucks! Tablet PCs are the future!

4-0 out of 5 stars I want my etch a sketch!
-----------------------------------------
HARDWARE

M275XL tablets 1.6 GHz is one of the high speed tablets compared to other on the market plus not very expensive. Yes more expensive than a laptop. Before buying Tablet PC make sure that you hold it and use it for a while before you buy it (do not drool... bad for screen)

Display View Angle: In tablet mode you will often hold it in different angles and hold it much closer than a laptop. Most screens fail in this test. M275 works OK in default landscape mode but very bad in both portraits and reverse landscape.

Pen: Check how well pens perform at the screen edges. Often scrollbars are on the edge in maximized view. I noticed sometime physical touch point on the screen and the 'soft pointer' don't align (off by 1/2 the thickness of scrollbar) making it difficult to use. M275X works OK. Few times I have had to recalibrate pointer/pen.

Processor and Memory: Low CPU speeds and lesser RAM might might be a factor if you plan to use this for something more than data entry and/or etch-a-sketch.

SOFTWARE

M275 ships with Table PC Edition 2002. Microsoft will be launching 2004 Edition with better features in June... that is what I last heard. It ships with Windows Journal and Office Works OneNote, which are really good basic tools for free form writing and recording information in tablet mode.

Other more serious graphic application such as Corel Graphigo, SketchBook, or Office 2003 with OneNote will improve your productivity.

BOTTOM LINE

M275 is good hardware except viewing angle issues. I just use it in default landscape mode and I am OK with that. Go for more CPU speed and memory. Hard disk space of 40GB~60GB is ample. Upgrade to Edition 2004 will be free... yeah from Microsoft. If you can't wait... BUY IT!!! And, if you can... DON'T WAIT!!!

It takes a week to get used to pen and different user interface.

NOTE: Don't buy (or take it for free) cheapest Gateway carrying case. Better off using manila envelope. Very thin. No pockets. Minimal padding. No protection. No use. Buy an extra Pen $20.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Machine and Very Versatile
The best part about this machine is the versatility it has in providing you both the Tablet PC experience and when needed converts to a standard laptop. It took me about two weeks to get comfortable with the stylus but now it is second nature.

I use the M275 in Tablet mode about 75% of the time. I have downloaded Microsoft Reader and find it quite easy to read ebooks. I also have subsribed to Zinio Magazine reader and have subsribed to both PC Magazine and PC World. Being able to hyperlink to various products in the ezines in great.

The system is a bit heavy but it has not prevented me from carrying it around the house. The Centrino CPU makes it very convenient to take around the house and connect wirelessly to the net. I had no difficulty setting it up with my wireless network. Battery life is quite good and the battery charges very quickly. I can't say enough good things about this system. Although a bit heavy it is well worth the money I paid to get this great system. Gateway has done their homework and developed a great Tablet PC. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Toshiba refuses to replace defective products
Bought the M205 in January 2004. Took it in for repair a couple weeks later because microphone (too close to speaker) was causing feedback through the speaker (ear-piercing shriek). Toshiba authorized service rep. was unable to repair it (after ordering and installing a back-ordered part from Toshiba, about 4 weeks of effort on my part). Now Toshiba says a "Toshiba Engineer" must have a crack at it. Getting this thing repaired could become a part-time job. Perhaps if you're fortunate enough to purchase an M205 that does not have this problem you'll be happy, but if you ever have a problem, be prepared for a real struggle.....

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Tablet Yet
first of all, don't pay attention to either of the negative write ups here... the first guy (with the short write up) doesn't even own this product; the second guy (the angry one) isn't even writing about the *correct* product. and if he is, he very curiously got his hands on an M200 about a year before it was released.
without a doubt, this machine is outstanding. fast as hell, very responsive, wonderful screen (quite bright!), great upgradeability, etc. but that's just as far as the laptop functionality goes. as far as being a tablet pc, the M200 stands head and shoulders above every other tablet on the market. not only is it speedy, but it stays cool (even when the fan kicks in, you can barely hear it). the screen is the brightest and most readable i've seen on any tablet, and the viewing angle is greatly improved over the 1st gen. tablets. i've had both the acer c102ti and the c110ti, and the toshiba is the best i've owned yet. it's not just the main features either --- it's loaded with great small features that make a huge difference. for one, the screen 'texture' is tacky in comparison to other, slicker tablet screens, making it emulate a pen-on-paper feel much better than other tablets. the build quality is also far superior to my acer, and even to the 3500 series. the hinge is much sturdier, and the latch (just like on the 3500) is quite solid as well. battery life is between 4 and 4.5 hours, and the wifi works great (it is the standard intel 2100 chipset, but you can switch it out for a 802.11g card later if you like). the only complaint i've had so far is that it was pretty expensive (i paid $2300 for it), but you certainly get what you pay for with this one. i have absolutely no regrets, and could not recommend this machine more if you are serious about having a top of the line laptop AND the best tablet yet.

5-0 out of 5 stars What else does all this?
This convertible Tablet PC has met every expectation that I had: long battery life, good sized keyboard, fast performance. I was worried that the screen might be too small because of the high native resolution (SXGA+), but I can read the screen just fine, and the text barely blurs when you change to XGA resolution. The tablet has accelerometers that allow you to issue commands via shaking the device, so far I haven't found this to be very useful.

Pros:
- good sized keyboard (no shrinked keys, like right shift)
- hi res screen (hand writing looks more like a real pen)
- includes Microsoft OneNote
- fast change between screen resolutions
- not too heavy to use as a tablet
- good performance
- battery life ~4 hours
- you can get a 7200 rpm hard drive if you customize at Toshiba.com

Cons
- Touch pad isn't as fluid as others
- off angle viewing is horrible
- no firewire port
- screen appears a little grainy because of the protective coating
- short key stroke feels a little unsatisfying

Despite the cons, I still have to give this device five stars because there is no other convertible that has this tablet's combination of build quality, software, battery life, performance, screen, and weight.

A note on Toshiba Customer Service: I had to contact them a couple of times because my SD card slot wasn't working properly, and I had no problems. I received the same type of customer service that I've experienced with other big name companies like Sony.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love mine
This Tablet PC is actually a laptop computer with added functionality of digital ink, which is a very helpful tool in different tasks that I have. Screen is very bright and I can see from different angles, also good software were included free or well may be I paid for all that. Hand written recognition capabilities are among the best I have experienced and enjoyed in this industry after a while. lots of other good features.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good Tablet PC, Best Convertible
Best screen, performance, design, graphics and sound possible in a Tablet PC.
Lots of good features, connectivity and software, OneNote is the best, it does everything. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Marginally larger than the Portege 3500 Tablet PC it replaces, Toshiba's Portege M200 Tablet PC is also more adaptable, more battery efficient and substantially more powerful. Blending the speed of a standard-size midrange notebook with the convenience of pen-based input and subcompact portability, the Portege M200 is a great fit for those who are handier with a pen than a keyboard and value a truly petite profile.

The unit is most at home when used to enter, store and share notes and concepts that might otherwise be entered in handwritten format. In fact, measuring just 11.6 by 9.8 by 1.3/1.5 (depending on configuration) and tipping the scales at a scant 4.5 pounds, the Portege M200 is just slightly more bulky than a conventional paper-based notepad. Users input data in one of two ways -- either by sketching directly on the swiveling, double-duty 12.1-inch poly-silicon SXGA+ TFT color LCD display screen (maximum resolution 1400x1050) or via the system's 84-key keyboard.

Though the Portege M200 is not as powerful as a comparably priced but substantially larger desktop replacement notebook, it is one of the fastest tablets currently on the market. Sporting an Intel "Centrino"-based processor (1 MB Level 2 cache) running at 1.5 GHz, a whopping 512 MB RAM memory and an nVidia GeForce FX Go5200 32M graphics processor with 32 MB of dedicated DDR video memory, the unit will easily handle most day-to-day mobile computing tasks and the vast majority of today's most popular 3-D apps too.

The Portege M200 features today's most desirable connectivity options, including an integrated 56K modem for low-speed e-communications, a 10 Base-T//100 Base-TX Ethernet connection for fast LAN and Internet access, and Wi-Fi compliant wireless LAN technology for those times when you can't plug in. The system also sports a surprisingly large 40 GB hard disk and facilities for an external CD and/or DVD drive, a pair of ultra-fast USB 2.0 ports for plug and play peripherals, an integrated TouchPad, 13 function keys, a speaker and microphone and full 16-bit stereo sound. Battery life is estimated at a whopping 4.34 hours. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A breakthrough technology, sign of things to come.
This thing is amazing. Since I got it a month ago I no longer touch either of my desktops and I nearly stopped using paper (I mean, to write on!). Superb 1400x1050 resolution exceeds anything you find useable on a desktop monitor. The tablet mode is great, too, with high resolution, intuitive interface and a comfortable pen. I write equations a lot, which is basically impossible with just a keyboard and a mouse, so the tablet mode is very handy. Handwriting recognition is very good, not that it matters, since most people type faster than they write, anyway. Speach recognition is also built in, but I never bothered to train it properly, and it's useless without training. Microphone and (monoaural)speaker are good enough for Skype and MSN Messenger, but not for watching DVD movies. Which is a moot point since there is no built-in optical drive of any kind. Had to buy an external USB 2.0 DVD-RW. No Firewire port, either. Can't have everything. Not yet anyway. Battery life is good, about 4 hours in the long-life mode, enough for most domestic flights, if you hate the inflight movies. The wow factor is fun, too, no question, especially when I take handwritten notes on it.

I wish this tablet was thinner, as it's hard to write on a surface a full inch above the table level, so I either prop its far side with something, or simply keep it on my laps. It gets a bit hot at full power, but quite nice in the long-life mode. Built-in wireless networking is 802.11b, not .g, which is good enough for now.

As this technology matures (thinner, slide-out keyboard, more tablet-friendly apps etc.) it will likely displace both regular laptops and pure tablets, since the price difference is not that high.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great
I love mine! it works great my only problem is that it has to have an external cd drive, otherwise it is amazing. As a student ai use it to take notes which i can later convert into text, to make nice, neat, and readable notes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect replacement for my standard laptop
I don't think any other Tablet PC on the market could have replaced my regular laptop. The Toshiba works the same as any other mid-sized laptop in all ways except for one that I can think of: the lack of an internal optical drive. This has not caused me any problems because I load all of my applications from a server, but I imagine it would be a problem for other people.

I won't comment on the tablet responsiveness or the good points about the operating system -- in these respects I believe it is as good as other machines. I will focus on what I think makes this model stand out in particular.

I believe Toshiba addressed all of the issues that existed in the earlier generation Portege 3500 series tablets. For example, there no longer exists a bezel on the monitor (it seems on the older models the bezel would get in the way of writing closer to the corners of the screen). Another example is a hardware button that allows you to change the screen orientation simply based on the direction you hold the machine (!!) -- it used to be a bit more tedious to rotate the screen. A third item is the screen resolution: 1400 x 1050 -- this makes for some small letters, but when using a tablet my tendency is to hold the screen closer than when I use it like a laptop, so the extra desktop real estate comes in very handy.

Additionally, I like the fact that the screen orientation will automatically change when you switch from tablet mode to clamshell laptop mode (and vice versa). This makes it very easy to switch from writing on it like a piece of paper to typing into a document and going back to writing again. I've found that particularly useful because often one method of input is better than the other.

The other things I like about this machine are that it is my first Toshiba laptop (I have used 6) that has not caused me any hibernation or standby difficulties. The system can very quickly go into hibernation or standby, it seems to very minimally drain the battery in either mode, and can quickly be brought back up from hibernation. It will come back up even more quickly from standby. This has made this computer very easy to transport from one meeting to another, and realistically be able to replace my paper-based notebook.

Finally, what I have really come to like about this tablet is the amount of use I can get without AC power. The actual battery life has been probably around 3 to 3.5 hours. In practice, what I have done is to take the machine out of my briefcase in the morning, use it for taking notes in meetings, move it around from meeting to meeting and around the office, put it in standby whenever I am not using it or in between meetings or during phone calls, and it can last as long as 6 hours or more (since it is not always on).

The combination of all of these great features have enabled me to essentially dispense with paper, with the exceptions of documents or papers other give to me. The machine has changed the way in which I work on a daily basis.

1-0 out of 5 stars broke down the week I got it
Toshiba is the worst! The computer broke down the first week I got it, and all Toshiba assistance could do in FOUR months from them is to tell me to bring it to THREE different places to get it repaired!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars From the guy who wrote the book on Tablet PCs
I wrote "Absolute Beginner's Guide to Tablet PCs". I reviewed lots of different Tablet PCs, and this is the one I use. It has the highest-resolution screen, good disk space, zippy performance, and lots of extra features.

If you want the fastest Tablet PC with lots of screen real estate and portability, the M200 is the one for you. I had a Toshiba Portege 3500 before this one, and the M200 is definitely a step up.

I have purchased ten Toshiba Tablet PCs for my company, and none of them have broken. The M200 is a more stable machine than the Portege 3500,though.

Great job, Toshiba! ... Read more

Featuring natural pen-input functionality, which lets users write directly and comfortably on the display, the TravelMate 250PE series is the first mobile PC to combine digital inking with Intel Pentium 4 performance in a full-sized notebook PC. The TravelMate 250PE series allows users to work in ways that are familiar without sacrificing the convenience they have come to expect from conventional Microsoft Windows-based laptops. The TravelMate 250PE series is designed as a traditional, three-spindle clamshell notebook computer. Outfitted with Acer's Tablet Input Panel Support (TIPS) and screen digitizer, users can adjust the LCD to a comfortable writing angle and annotate directly on the screen. Acer's electro magnetic resonance (EMR) pen allows users to write, file and store handwritten text in documents and notes using digital ink and convert handwriting into typewritten text. And, of course, users can input data via a standard-sized keyboard and touchpad for conventional notebook functionality - it's a laptop! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars CPU too slow for WinXP's hefty hardware requirements
A 800 Mhz Celeron CPU doesn't cut it. MAYBE if they had included Windows 2000, but WinXP needs a 1.5 Ghz or higher cpu to feel snappier.

I still don't know what's the hype with the "tablet PC" idea.

I recommend a SONY VAIO P4 notebook, instead of this.

2-0 out of 5 stars First-gen TabletPC to avoid.
It's not the worst tablet to own, but it doesn't hit any of the sweet spots for a tablet other than WiFi abilities.

1) It's not convertible, so you have to buy a USB keyboard for data entry.

2) It's not using WindowsXP for Tablets, so you don't get the integration of Microsoft's specific handwriting recognition abilities.

3) The hardware is pitiful, clearly offering power-saving compromises to overcome some engineering problems. The CPU is slow, the RAM is limited, and your hard drive isn't exactly fast or large.

The best of the first-gen tablets was the Fujitsu Stylistic, but it cost twice as much. Of course, it also had twice as much ability. For tablet shoppers, the second-gen offers WindowsXP for Tablets, Office 2003 with OneNote (really leverages the tablet's strong points), better CPU selections and more mature engineering (convertibles!). Toshiba's Portege 3500 is probably the best tablet in the second generation, and that's the one you buy.

2-0 out of 5 stars Does not include Windows XP TabletPC edition!
Although this PC has a nice combination of features and appears to be well designed, it is just running Windows XP pro.

It does NOT come with "Windows XP Tablet PC edition", so I suspect that the ink and recognition features you might expect will be missing, or not up to the standard of a real "TabletPC".

In addition, the stylus is very thin - more like a PDA stylus and is difficult to hold. ... Read more
