Great value!
Like the previous reviewer, this is my first notebook/laptop as well. I bought it as an alternative to the Epson P2000 40GB photo storage unit (that's been sold out everywhere) to download pictures for an upcoming two-week vacation to France. I haven't regretted this decision and think it's even better solution for me overall in the long run.

Not only does this unit have twice the storage (80GB), but being a notebook computer I've also installed Adobe Photoshop CS2 which will enable me to process my images during the vacation instead of doing it all when I get back.My only extended use has been a three-day trip to Yosemite which was a great opportunity to see how this concept was going to work out.Being able to download 2+ GB of photo's per day using a Sandisk USB CF reader, see them on the 12.1" screen and also process the RAW files in CS2 was in a word... sweet!Even the memory hungry CS2 was responsive with the standard 512MB ram - although I'll probably upgrade to a 1GB at some point.

Important factors to me in considering which notebook to buy where screen quality, battery life and weight.The screen resolution and quality is quite "good", but not as great as the VAIO and some others.Battery life seems to run a little over 3hrs with continuous use and weighing a little over 4 lbs, it is light!The wifi works like a champ and connected easily with my D-Link unit at home.The built-in ethernet port is significantly faster as you'd expect. Although the touchpad and its software work well, I'm too used to using a mouse and also bought a USB mouse.This system seems to be well made and has a nice quality feel to it. The feel of the keyboard as far as notebooks/laptops go is more than adequate and easy to use.

Oh, and the iGO charger unit that I bought for auto/air/wall charging is also a great convenience factor to think about - one charger does it all.Finding a nice "sleeve" to simply protect the surface when it's being carried in a suitcase or backpack has been a challenge, but it looks like the 12" Apple iBook dimensions are close enough.We'll see...

Great Notebook.
This is my first laptop. I got it at Circuit City for less than here at Amazon.

Battery life is good. The Intel Wireless-G adapter works fine with my Linksys WRT54G -- 48-54Mbps. WRT54GS was no faster. The 80GB hard drive is responsive. Loaded software was adequate. Has two video adapters so you can display on another monitor. Lacks a microphone (has a jack) and FireWire. Speakers are adequate but not great. Touchpad has some good features, but I added a Logitech USB notebook mouse. I have MS Office Pro, Visual Studio 2003 and SQL Server Personal installed and performance is fast.

Great For Cables
This case is big enough to handle all of the cables that come with your notebook in such a way as to avoid damage to them or from them. I kept my AC Adaptor in the big mesh pocket and internet/usb cables in the slip pockets, as well as, a keypad a DV inverter and a usb hub. They shared pockets, but all fit. The case lid is effectively a CD/smartcard visor. You can fit quite a few in there, but I've never really trusted placing CDs in such close proximity. Processor
At the heart of any computer lies the CPU (or processor), a massive collection of miniature transistors that governs the speed and power of the entire unit. Some of today's notebooks are equipped with high-end CPUs on par with those found in top-of-the-line desktop PCs, while others are quick enough only for basic duties such as word processing, e-mail, and the like. The Qosmio E15-AV101 is equipped with an Intel Pentium M processor 735 running at 1.7 GHz. This is one of three components that comprise Intel's efficient Centrino system, the others being a specialized Intel chipset and integrated wireless support. Centrino-equipped notebooks are generally smaller, easier on the batteries, and more versatile than their non-Centrino counterparts. Memory
Computers typically store information on their hard drives, but they keep frequently and recently accessed data in random access memory (RAM) for faster retrieval. More RAM means more efficient computing, superior multitasking, and less strain on your hard drive. The Qosmio E15-AV101 incorporates 512 MB of fast PC2700 DDR333 SDRAM memory. Though ultrademanding users may want to expand this total to the unit's boggling maximum of 2,048 MB, the stock allotment of RAM is more than enough for the vast majority of situations.

Video
CPUs are usually so busy doing basic calculations that they need help translating visual output to the screen. This is the duty of the graphics card (or graphics controller). This system's graphics controller is an nVidia GeForce FX Go5200 with 64 MB of dedicated DDR video memory. Missing critical information
The system is regular, normal I would say for any kid who is not looking for cutting edge games.
My biggest complain is that HP made this computer just for Windows XP Home edition. After installing Professional edition you will end up with no sound and may be some thing else. There are not drivers for this system if you change OS, basically you can not upgrade computer.

Good everyday laptop
I got this laptop recently and I am very happy with it.

pros:

1) 15 inch display. It is very clear. Brightness is easily adjustable.
2) XP 2800. AMD Barton core. This is one fast processor. I would say that this processor is faster than any 1MB Centrino processors. (I have not used any 2MB Centrino processor machines to judge)
3) 512 MB RAM. You can really notice the difference over 256 MB ones.
4) Low price. Other notebook offering CD-RW/DVD combo, 40 GB, 512 MB RAM and fast processor are all generally $200 - $300 more expensive.
5) Relatively good battery life. I have gotten 2.5 - 3.75 hours of battery life. It really depends on what you do. If you play games, it will probably only last 1 hour. I have gotten 3+ hours of batter life watching movies on lower power setting. I use crystal CPUID to set the power setting instead of PowerNOW. It gives me more options, but also give you a chance to fry you CPU if you mess up.

cons:

1) USB 1.1 port and no firewire port. Basically means you cannot have fast access to external data. If you plan to do video editing, you will have to buy a firewire PCMCIA card. USB 1.1 is much slower compared to USB 2.0. Still, you should be able to get by to use with a digital camera.
2) High power consumption processor. This XP-M 2800 processor has a peak power consumption of 72W (compare to around 25W in Centrino). This puppy gets hot when running processor demanding applications. Mine CPU temperature have reached 82 degress celsius.
3) Integrated graphics card. Amazon mis-printed the graphics card for this unit, unless amazon.com gets different configurations from what I got. My unit has a RADEON IGP 320 integrated display card. It is not very fast, but still able to play some games depending how picky you are on video card. If you are getting a laptop to play the latest games, this laptop is not it.
4) The touchpad espically the scroll area is terrible. Whenever I try to type, my palm is on top of the scrollbar region of the touchpad causing my window to scroll up and down randomly. My only remedy is to disable the touchpad scrolling feature. All HP/Compaq had to do it to move the touchpad to the left 0.3 inches to solve this problem. I do not know what were they thinkging.
5) No integrated wireless card. Not a big deal. You can buy a PCMCIA with all the money you saved.
6) No docking station port. Probably not a big deal for most people.

amazing laptop for the price u pay
the best laptop u can get for the price u pay. i cant understand why everybody is complaining about the tochpad. compaq didnot enable the tapping option for the touchpad. so u have to just got t0 control panel--otherhardware---mouse----device settings---settings--enable the tapping option and u will be on the go like any other notebooks. the processor is also as fast as pentium.on the other side this notebook didnot have the wireless card. but no complaints as u can buy it for not more than 30 bucks.hope this helps... ... Must Have!
This is wonderful for laptop users that travel or like to move your laptop around a lot. If I leave my laptop somewhere I hate having to worry about tripping over wires and wires everywhere just look bad. This is really small and compact! Perfect for traveling too. I've used it for about 8 months now and it hasnt had one problem...it still recoils well!

Useless - does not retract
I agree with the previous review. This phone cord worked twice. Now, it only retracts about half way, and keeps getting worse. I'm returning it for a refund. Don't waste your time with this.

DO NOT Wast your time with this product...period
I am on my second one and I will be returning this one also. Both of them worked once and then would not retract fully after that. I was so mad I almost threw it against the wall. I thought the first one was a defect, but then when I got the second one I realized it was a design flaw... If you buy the Targus one keep your receipt because I guarantee you will be returning it. What I don't get is how Targus has the guts to release this product and also put on it: Satisfaction Guaranteed. What a joke...

The VAIO PCV-RS720G features a new style of video controller -- a hybrid of sorts between high-end standalone "dedicated memory" cards and less capable integrated "shared memory" controllers.
